Armed Joseph McVey Arrested At Asheville Airport: Wanted to “Talk To President Obama”

video

Details are starting to emerge about Joseph S. McVey, of Coshocton, Ohio, who was arrested for wanting to “talk to Obama” with a gun at the Asheville airport. Earlier reports suggested that McVey got no where near the president, but now we learned that he was also in possession of formulas for rifle scopes and a police scanner. He’s currently being held on $100,000 bond, but federal authorities are now asking him to be held, even if he makes bail.

He looks like the chairman of the College Republicans and some community college in Alabama.

The weapons situation is getting very troubling, again. Seems that any unstable kook or drunken lout in our nation can be heavily armed.

  • writer

I believe it said he’s from Ohio, Minister Royal. What is this obsession with Alabama?

Wow! I was going to ask how long before the loons blamed Republicans for this… but even I didn’t think it would be that quick!

Nice job, Royal! You took a photo of some nutcase, and made assumptions based upon NO facts, NO evidence… just the way he looked! To the thinking world, that’s called stereotyping and racism.

Of course, to you (and give it another 5 minutes, and I’m sure Bill Adkins will be along to back him up), this is reasonable and completely logical. I mean, just look at his hair! Clearly, he’s a Republican.

Royal, you’ve reached a new level of bigotry. Congrats.

  • Moderate

Sounds like another security guard wannabe. I worry about people willing to work for minimum wage just so they can drive around in a car with lights on it. Our township hired one and there is a big worry that he will go overboard with his authority.

  • Puter Boi

Kinda creepy his name is McVey, huh? I know it’s spelled differently, but that doesn’t make it any less creepy.

  • writer

Minister Royal never lets the facts get in the way of his bigotry. The article clearly said the guy was from Ohio. So what does the minister do? Equate him with a southerner. Is Ohio a southern state?

  • The Real Royal King

Come off it, INB. You see a young woman with dark, curly hair and little make-up wearing a long madras dress, you say she must be a Democrat. You see a heavily made up blonde from the bottle young woman, you say she must be a Republican. You see a guy in short pants with a “Free Tibert” T-shirt and Birkenstocks, you say he must be a Democrat. You see a guy with wire-rimmed glasses, short hair, prison pallor and pimples, you say he must be a Republican. We all do it.

    I would be concerned, Moderate.

  • writer

    That’s called projection, Minister.

  • The Real Royal King

    Is Ohio a southern state?

We all know from recent elections and from elected officials like Mean Jean Schmidt, Ohioans can be very southern in their demeanor and ideology. However, I never said the individual was from Alabama. I clearly said “looks like”. That’s a simile. He explains something while not necessarily being the fact at hand. Articulate and literate people often use the simile to explain difficult concepts to others.

  • writer

But if someone said all blacks look alike, you go running for your crying towel. I will await the “yoke of oppression” line.

  • The Real Royal King

I think the sting of discrimination more appropriate in this context, and either gives you ample opportunity about your misfortune of being a White Christian male in Amerika.

  • ex political-media hack

” formulas for rifle scopes”…. what the heck does that mean? drawings?

a lil journalism if you please…

  • writer

Same thing, Minister. In other words, stereotyping is okay when you do it.

  • ex political-media hack

“misfortune of being a White Christian male in Amerika.”

there is something seriously F-ed with The Real Royal King.

    talk about disturbed wackos….

    dig this..

“Articulate and literate people often use the simile to explain difficult concepts to others.”

    OMG

Me thinks “The Real Royal King” is a freak!

I mean who writes shit like that!?

  • writer

Minister Royal is the most bigoted, hateful person around, and stereotypes anyone who disagrees with him. Then shucks it off with his ‘yoke of oppression’ or ‘sting of discrimination’ lines as if that excuses it.

  • The Real Royal King

    formulas for rifle scopes …

Indeed, formulae is the better plural, isn’t it?

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

Let me guess; The left is blowing this completely out of proportion, all he wanted to do was talk to the president and he just happened to be exercising his right to bear arms. Did I get the new talking point right?

  • MichelleF

He probably just wanted to tell him “thanks” and “keep up the good work”.

  • MichelleF

    The_Reasonable_Lib,

Let ME guess, he must be a tea-bagger bent on murdering anyone he who disagrees with him.

Probably degrees on which to turn the scope dial that correspond with distances for an accurate shot.

Maybe a typo. Instead of ‘formula’, maybe he meant ‘recipe’. Now that Ohio is a southern state, anything is possible.

  • writer

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Time doesn’t permit going into that.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

    @ Michelle F:
For the record, I never call them tea-baggers, I believe tea-partiers used that before liberals did. And no, crazy is as crazy does. There is no political category to put people such as this man, Joseph Stack, Timothy McVeigh and John Hinkley in.

  • MichelleF

Now there is a reasonalbe response, which I admire. Unfortunately, everytime something like this happens there is a rush in the media and on this site to brand the perp as a conservative, even when the evidence is to the contrary. I stand correct on this one.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

    @ MichelleF:
It goes both ways, each side constantly attempts to demonize the other (myself included), when we really want the same thing, but we go about it in different ways. People instantly branded Stack as a progressive due to his beliefs on war and inequality, but he also disliked government organizations like the IRS which is a conservative point. It’s impossible to understand him unless you yourself are crazy like the people who post youtube videos or start facebook groups calling him a hero. It’s nearly impossible to eliminate bias from media. I like this site because it usually provides conservative and liberal points of view. Usually though, I go to sites like politifact and factcheck on information. I’ll also trust the CBO, which is bipartisan, over an individual economist or news source, be it Fox News or MSNBC. I will at the very least admit that Glenn Beck sometimes has a point, I feel that Keith Olbermann sometimes does as well. This doesn’t excuse the rhetoric

Yeah, no. I learned a while ago not to judge people by how they look. I also learned the definition of racism, bigotry, and stereotypes… which you fit to a T.

But lets apply this to another situation (and then watch Royal run away): You think that you can tell political affiliation just by looking at someone… YET, you believe that the new Arizona law will promote racial profiling. Those points of view seem to contradict, do they not? On one hand, you think you can tell a lot by looking at someone. On the other, you think it’s bad to try to tell someone’s citizenship by applying the same standards.

So which is it? Is profiling good… or bad? Or perhaps it’s just a “you” thing… and only “you’re allowed” to do it.

  • The Real Royal King

Un momento, mi amigo. If you don’t understand the difference between profiling by law enforcement officials with detention, possible indictment, conviction, prison time, deportation, and generalizations made by someone without the force of law behind them, made either to explain or even in a jocular sense, then I think the problem ought to be self-evident to us all. Usted, amigo mío, son el problema.

I have to disagree a tad. It was only when the libs came out right away and branded him as a conservative that conservatives said wait a minute, he appears to be more liberal because of X,Y, and Z. I think if you go back a bit and look at the last few instances like this you will see that I am right. The Left ALWAYS comes out immediately and brands the person conservative. Personally, I’m like you, who really care, the person is a NUT!

AH! So it is a, “I can do it, but you can’t,” situation!

I was unaware. Can you do us all a favor and just print up a list of things YOU can do, that everyone else can’t or shouldn’t.

You can start with: insults, bigotry, unfounded accusations, lying, manipulation, selective outrage, double standards, racism, hatred, egotism, elitism, and (of course) blatant hypocrisy.

I’m sure I’ve left off a few more things, but you know… it’s your list.

  • MichelleF

King, I have to ask, Obama and large portions of african americans are against amnesty and gay marriage. Are they racist homophobes like the whites that do are (in your opinion)?

  • The Real Royal King

Yes, Michelle, there is homosexuality among African-Americans, and there are homophobes as well. The latter are clearly wrong. President Obama is wrong about any number of matters. However, I’m not sure I understand the causal link or the relationship between racism and homosexuality. As such, I may not have fully responded to you.

  • The Real Royal King

Not surprisingly, INB, you have maliciously distorted my response. Shame on you!

I’m sorry that my response did not meet your preconceptions of what it would be, but you have nonetheless gravely sinned.

  • MichelleF

I”m not saying there is a connection, just wanted answers to both. So when the whole prop 8 issue came up, why were mormoms called homophobes, but african americans weren’t? I would just like there to be consistency among those who like to brand cons as racist, homophones, etc. Let’s hold everyone to the same standard.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

    @ MichelleF:
I have to disagree, each side always comes out and immediately proclaims the other side as the culprit. The Reagan assassination was said to be by a liberal but as you and I agree, he was just crazy. This attempt to demonize the other side is rather irrational. this is human nature. We’re always going to attempt to displace blame from ourselves. In the bible, Adam put the blame on Eve. Obama puts the blame on Bush. Bush puts the blame on Clinton. Clinton puts it on Reagan and Reagan puts it on carter. At the end of the day, the pointing fingers does nothing, what you do about it does.

As an African American allow me to offer some insight. The Mormon faith is one which openly denounces homosexuality and whose followers feel that it is immoral. African Americans are a racial group, that is the only banner which we’re under. We come from many different areas; conservative, liberal, christian, atheist, homosexual and heterosexual. There are a large number of us who are homophobic, and there are a some who are homosexual. There’s the difference; we don’t have a doctrine that openly denounces something and we do not all fall under that, in this case mormons actually do. I don’t think all conservatives are evil homophobes, and I would hope you don’t think all liberals aren’t hypocritical, communists who hate America.

That’s the one he won’t be able to answer. He”ll move on to another thread..

  • The Real Royal King

why were mormoms called homophobes, but african americans weren’t?

That did happen, I suppose, but, in all honesty, I never personally heard the word “homophobe” used in connection with the LDS. I don’t doubt it was. Let’s remember that it wasn’t African Americans so incensed by the Proposition. It was African American churches and their leaders and members. African Americans, last I checked, were not so monolithic as you suggest. The LDS is rather monolithic, with rigid orthodoxy, and it has a long, lost history of doctrinally-based racism and homophobia. I’m sure you remember Romney, when he wasn’t making hair jokes, faultily remembering his father’s efforts to open the church to African Americans. Perhaps, that is the difference.

  • The Real Royal King

By the way, homophobia is wrong whether held by African Americans or LDS folks or even the whiter than Wonder Bread Righter. I’ve already said not all African Americans are homophobic. I don’t believe all LDS folks are, either.

  • timzank

Pretty weak spin King. Good immediate deflection (I never personally etc) but too wordy on the obfuscation.

Oh, and back to the original post for a moment, Is there anyone here posting that DOESN’T believe the only reason Colby put the guys name in the headline was because it’s McVey?

Does anybody posting here believe for a minute if his name were different it would have been “Armed Bob Smith Arrested At Asheville Airport: Wanted to “Talk To President Obama”?????

    or

“Armed Ali Ashram Arrested At Asheville Airport: Wanted to “Talk To President Obama”????

  • The Real Royal King

You do have to admit, Tim Z. Ank, the McVey sound is a bit spooky, and, in my opinion, a legitimate part of the story and even the headline.

  • MichelleF

    The Real Royal King,
Thinking that homosexual is against God’s plan, does not make one homophobic. I have an uncle who is gay that I adore, but I also happen to think that the life’s he’s leading is contrary to god’s word. As far as mormons being racist, why don’t you ask Gladys Knight and Thurl Bailey (former nba’er) what they think as african american’s as well as mormons. I personally think that blacks were given what we call the priesthood when Heavenly Father felt the earth was ready for it and I don’t question his judgement. You don’t have to agree with that.

  • MichelleF

King, if you are referring to Tim McVeigh, you are right it is a little spooky. Please remember however, that according to Tim V’s own words, OC was a direct response to Waco, which of course was under clinton.

  • The Real Royal King

And, I don’t agree with that proposition, Michelle. By the same token, I don’t agree with many of the justifications and excuses of my own Church. Unmarried priests? Yet, history supports a long period of married priesthood, and Anglicans can become RC priests and keep their spouses. No women priests? Again, history supports women serving as priests in monastic communities and even parishes. Yes, but, there were no women seated at the Last Supper. Indeed, there were serving, which is what priests do. Besides, there was no pope at the Last Supper. Religions are often flawed, but are judged on how effectively they work to bring us closer to God.

  • MichelleF

I do not believe my religion is flawed, I’m sorry that you think yours is.

Nice way to sugarcoat your bigotry. Devout Christians are “taught” to HATE sin. Devout Christians consider homosexuality a sin and an abomination therefore it is correct to infer that devout Christians hate homosexuals and would like nothing to do with them. The very definition of homophobia. Tap dance around that.

BTW, blacks and the African American community in general have the highest incidence of homophobia in the U.S. It has little to do with religion…though.

It’s now more than 24-hrs since this story first broke and thus far, everything has backed-up my initial contention which I had commented to another site: All indications is that this was just an over-zealous kid, ham-operating, deputy-wannabee like there are in every American town and his only “crime” was not thinking through the appearances of having a handgun while watching Air Force One.

I mean, I don’t know what they mean by “rifle scope formulas”, I could make a pretty good guess, but I assume that you’d need a rifle and a scope for them to do any good.

  • The Real Royal King

Why don’t you show us all where I was wrong.

I’m not sure where you come off making demands on a commenter, INB, but I explained, in succinct and clear terms, the consequences of the police using their power, power that ordinary citizens do not have, to use racial profiling to enforce a law which invites the most terrible types of consequences, and the consequences of an ordinary citizen drawing upon common stereotypes to make a rhetorical point. In doing so, I did not us race, ethnicity or gender in a discriminatory fashion. If you don’t understand the difference in that, then it is only because it does not feed your ego to do so, or it does not conveniently support some inane and false point you were thwarted from making by another’s use of logic and rhetoric. It’s time for you to grow up, son.

Which was you saying why YOU could use racial profiling, but only because you don’ t have any real power or authority. Apparently, you can do something that someone else can’t… and why isn’t that a double standard again?

OOOOH, I get it now! You’ve gotten caught! You admitted to stereotyping people… you admitted to being a bigot… you admitted to racial profiling, but you got caught applying the same thing to another situation… so you’re trying to blame me for “not getting it.”

HA! If you were any more transparent, we’d put shutters on you.

If you don’t understand the difference in that, then it is only because it does not feed your ego to do so, or it does not conveniently support some inane and false point you were thwarted from making by another’s use of logic and rhetoric.

Yeah, just go back to the “I was joking,” line. It really seems to be your only way out at this point. You’ve already tried lying, changing the story, insulting, and dodging the issue… so it looks like your last resort is back to the, “I’m a comedian, and made a joke…” routine. I’m sure someone will believe it… although, it might just be you.

Of course, what’s REALLY funny is that yesterday, you lectured someone on their “inability” to recognize or admit when they’re wrong, and move on. But more hypocrisy, and more “I can do it, you can’t” from you isn’t anything surprising. I wonder what your bigotry will lead to today?!
