Picture Of The Day: Cairo Protester Holds Sign That Says “Thank You Facebook”

How valuable has social media been in spreading the message of protesters in Egypt? Just look at the photo taken today by NBC News correspondent Richard Engel. A protester in Cairo holds a sign written mostly in Arabic that reads, “Thank you, Facebook.” Moment in history captured in one still image.

Anti-government protesters have used social media effectively, despite efforts by the Mubarak government to shut down access.

A Facebook page devoted to the protests has attracted more than 80,000 fans, and Twitter hashtags like #Jan25, #Egypt and #Cairo have been trending for days. Below the trending topics, social media has also been exceptionally effective, journalists in country report, in helping protesters communicate with each other and coordinate their efforts.

Engel’s photo, by the way, is also heating up social media, with nearly 600 likes on Facebook and over 500 re-tweets.

    Truth! It’s awesome.

    “Thank you Facebook”
    “Death to America!”
    “Death to Israel!”

    Nope! Nuthin’ crazy about that!

They were going to take off their shirts and do the body paint, but couldn’t round up enough guys to spell out ‘Death to America’.

It’s a bit of a stretch to claim that social media *started* any revolutions, but they’ve undoubtedly helped.

Who wants to be the one to tell them the creator of Facebook is Jewish?

  • DEFENDER-90

@writer—But not before he cut the head off the guy holding the Jhon 3:16 sign.

How’d they switch that lettering from “OBAMA” to “FACE BOOK”?

After thinking that over, realized it was in very bad taste. My apologies.

They would have had plenty of volunteers from their “Mainstream (American) Media” supporters that were cowering nearby!

Can’t read all the writing; resembles an old dental chart.

    Is signature by Muslim Brotherhood?

  • Dem4Ever

I asked my Egyptian friends what that sign says and it isn’t “Thank” you.

  • lazzzlo

    Remember this.

The world might have changed a bit.

    IPV4 to IPV6

    so this never happens again

  • Upon Further Review

That’s not an Egyptian protester — it’s the Middle East correspondent for Time magazine.

That sign, and every sign in Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, should be thanking George W. Bush and his Doctrine for the democracy that he strategized would occur upon his monumental decision to attack Iraq!

This is the most painfully idiotic article I have ever read.

Same guy is holding “Thank you Al Jazeera” sign– see Al Jazeera Live Blog entry 1:26 pm Sunday.

    And yes, painfully idiotic article.
