Sen. Coburn: Newt Gingrich Is ‘Not One’ I Would Support In A Presidential Primary

Video

Now that likely Republican candidate for president Newt Gingrich is temporarily cut loose from Fox News, it looks like fellow Republicans are wasting no time going after him. Republican Senator Tom Coburn strangely complimented Gingrich just seconds before attempting to decimate his chances of being taken seriously as a contender for the highest office.

Coburn remarked:

“He is undoubtedly the smartest man I’ve ever met. He is a thinker. He has great vision. The question to me is, does he have the capability to lead the country? And having served under him in the House, he’s probably not one that I would choose to support in a presidential primary. . . . We need somebody that’s soft and wide-eyed open and is stable and learned and is going to consistently bring us together rather than alienate us.”

That sure sounds like Coburn suggests that despite any intelligence Gingrich brings to the table, it’s not worth it if the country has to deal with his personality that lacks softness and stability. Besides this unexpected drive-by assault on Newt, Coburn also warned that today’s budget crisis should be of more concern to the nation than terrorism after 9/11, suggesting “the threat we’re facing today, in terms of our budget, finance and interest costs is a far greater threat than that ever was.”

    Smart man.

  • The Real Royal King

    The knives are out.

Of course, I understand why Coburn would not support the Newt and I fail to understand why anyone else would.

Who cares what Coburn thinks? I predict the resident left wingers will suddenly take a interest!

And no one principled in the RNC should support Romney due to his health care plan.

Have you noticed, that seems to have become a Talking Point among Democrats. Governor Patrick mentioned it on MTP, President Obama referred to it, a local Congressman mentioned it at a Support the Wisconsin Teacher fund raiser ….

It is rare that I agree with either of Oklahoma’s senators (or any of its legislators), but in this case, I feel that Sen. Coburn is correct. In order to succeed as a viable candidate, Newt Gingrich would need to rely on the voters having short memories.

Hopefully that will not be the case.

Yeah I have. It is the elephant in the room.

LOL, the fact is you don’t UNDERSTAND anything. Why would anyone with a brain still support Obama?

  • skyfet

Newt’s campaign bombed before he launched it.

Someone tell me why anyone would vote for him. What issue would he use to persuade the GOP/TP to vote for him.

    I can’t think of anything.

Anyway, this is his last shot, so why not, make some money along the way or after. Maybe add it to his Speaker title. Former Speaker and Former Presidential Candidate newt!

You are clearly the brightest knife AND the sharpest crayon HERE. Perhaps YOU should run for President YOURSELF. I think YOU would get A LOT of votes!!!

He’d have to suspend himself from the “Gordon Blower Show” first.

HAHAHA! That was actually a little funny. A little. Now put your hairnet back on and get back on the grill, old man. Those burgers won’t flip themselves. And for God’s sake pull up your pants! You’re in public!

After Mr. ETHANOL gingrich counted the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars he got from the ETHANOL LOBBY for supporting this waste of taxpayer money, he decided he has a shot a buying the election to become the “president of corn”.

Americans, conservatives and Republicans: DO NOT ALLOW THE NO-CHARACTER, AMNESTY-JOHN mccain diaster to be repeated. You, and America, can do better — a LOT better — than Mr. ETHANOL (aka, “Monica-Stain-Bill Lite”).

Replacing a president who’s is a PUPPET of the union bo$$e$ with one that’s a PUPPET of the ETHANIOL LOBBY really isn’t much of an improvement.

Coburn’s wrong if he thinks that this description is what the GOP needs, “We need somebody that’s soft and wide-eyed open…………..and is going to consistently bring us together rather than alienate us.” Stable and learned, yes, but the other parts of his statement sound like the typical RINO- if we just act nice, they’re going to LIKE us.

That attitude has proven to be wrong every time. Bullies won’t treat you better if you’re just nice to them while they steal your money and rub your face in the dirt. McCain was so terrified of being accused of “racism” that he wouldn’t wage a full-on campaign against Obama. We’ve seen the hatred of the Left ever since the 2000 election, aided and abetted by the legacy media, and no “soft” or “wide-eyed” candidate is going to change it. The Left is intellectually dishonest and power mad and any Republican candidate has to be prepared for their “Whack a Mole” mentality. A “wide-eyed” candidate can expect nothing but an icepick in the occular nerve from them.

Tom Coburn and Lindsey Graham couldn’t be more polar opposite to the two neanderthals they serve with, even if their positions are similar. Tom Coburn is one of the smartest and best in the whole chamber. Of course he wouldn’t support Newt Gingrich. I still bet he doesn’t run. Watch him get 2 more books out in the next 30 days. He’s the embodiment of dirty dishonest politics.

No worries. There is no one of principle in the RNC.

  • CosmosDan

I agree with you Tom. It would be great if someone as smart and honorable as you appear to be , would wind up being the GOP candidate.

I agree with your assessment of what we need. I’m skeptical that much of the public’s desire to hear the truth.

The problem is a leader who believes that must be joined by other leaders who want that as well, rather than fight that leader to serve their own agenda. And then the public itself must do part of the work. A democratic republic, requires more form it’s citizens to safeguard our liberties.

right. Your fellow Americans are the enemy. A lot of Liberals feel that way as well. What a shame.

  • Yoda002

Newt has a lot of baggage it doesn’t help his credibility.

  • Tedderman

Tom Coburn must have dementia and this is one of his clear moments.

So you get on Mediaite just about every day. You don’t really post anything of value. You just throw insults around to anyone who may have a different opinion than you.
For the record, I probably won’t respond to whatever quip you throw back at me.

He’s a principled guy and very beloved here in OK. Despite his staunch conservative pedigree, he does not let it affect his personal friendships. He’s the same guy who got booed at a town hall last year for saying he likes Pelosi as a person, but, hates her politics. He got booed for the first part. Coburn’s also a good friend of Obama. They worked together in the US Senate on bills they co-sponsored. He’s basically your old school Republican. Collegial, principled and definitely not a demagogue. Basically, the exact opposite of his fellow US Senator from OK (Inhoffe) or Gingrich. I never agree on him on maybe 90% of issues, but I respect him.

  • Gasket

BTW, he is a physician for those who don’t know. No dummy.

  • captaingrumpy

I think that all the folk should vote with their race.
Nothing else has worked for America.

I know Coburn is a practicing physician, and I usually agree with what he has to say. However, not this time. Whether it’s Gingrich or someone else I don’t want a candidate who’s squishy.

He’s also the one who made some offhand mildly negative comment about Fox at a town hall meeting and wound up defending it on ORielly, as ORielly lied to his face. “Oh we checked it out and nobody at Fox ever said that”
