Jen Psaki Rebuts Anti-Abortion Pastor Albert Mohler During Briefing: ‘Even a Fox News Poll’ Said 63% Support Roe
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki rebutted leading anti-abortion pastor Dr. Albert Mohler‘s criticism of President Joe Biden’s abortion stance by citing a Fox News poll.
Mohler criticized Biden’s remarks about the draft Supreme Court decision that would strike down Roe v. Wade, telling listeners that Biden “does not trust the American people to make this decision” — referring to the decision whether or not to ban women from choosing to have an abortion legally.
At the White House briefing Wednesday, Christian journalist Mona Austin of The Slice News brought Mohler’s critique to Psaki, who responded with a Fox News poll that she asserted demonstrates Mohler is an “outlier” on the issue:
MS. AUSTIN: Okay. And then real quick on abortion: A Christian conservative — his name is Albert Mohler — has commented on President Biden’s stance in an unusual position on abortion. I’m now quoting. He said that, “He and his administration do not trust the public in various areas to have the right to determine whether or not abortion should be legal in that area or not.”
So, he’s essentially saying that Biden does not think that states should have the right to determine how abortions — to the degree that abortions are legal or not.
MS. PSAKI: The President believes that it should continue to be federal law that women have the right to make choices with their doctors, as it has been for 50 years.
And I would just say, with all due respect to the person you mentioned, even a Fox News poll earlier this month showed that 63 percent of Americans want Roe to stand. So I think that’s actually kind of an outlier position as it relates to the American public.
Psaki is correct, the latest Fox News poll asked “Do you think the Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade or let it stand?” and 63 percent responded “Let it stand.”
Only 27 percent of all respondents replied “Overturn” — including just 45 percent of white evangelicals.
The Fox News polling unit is well-respected, and holds an “A” rating from FiveThirtyEight.
