TV News Anchor Arrested Shortly Before Going On-Air
Rui Chenggang, a popular news anchor on China Central Television, has been arrested by the Chinese government on corruption charges. CCTV is a state news channel but Chenggang and several executives have been detained by the government so far.
Chenggang is wildly popular in China, known for his big interviews; some of which can be particularly biting, such as when he got in a dig at U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke over U.S. owing China quite a bit of money.
Chenggang was arrested last week right before he was supposed to go on the air, and state media reported that he and one CCTV executive were “abruptly detained” as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on corruption at the channel.
