Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal released a bombshell report that indicated a GOP operative had attempted last year to recruit Russian hackers and was working with Michael Flynn to find Hillary Clinton’s emails. The WSJ also followed it up with another report noting that the Republican activist, Peter Smith, also put together a document citing a number of Donald Trump campaign officials, including Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Sam Clovis and Flynn.
During her broadcast last night, MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow highlighted the WSJ’s story and noted that this is the first news report showing collusion taking place between Russia and American officials in the election.
“It was the first detailed reporting we’ve ever had — actually, the first reporting we’ve ever had — that describes what appears to be an effort at American collusion with a Russian attack on our election last year,” she stated.
She then went on to describe the latest WSJ article and who it implicates.
In another interesting turn of events, the unnamed source the Journal used for its latest report outed himself in a blog post on LawFareblog.com, recounting how the now-deceased Smith approached him to see if he could authenticate Clinton’s emails. He then explained how he discovered Smith’s operation’s ties to the Trump campaign.
