Pelosi Bashes Trump Ahead of Immigration Speech: Merit-Based Migration is ‘Condescending’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bashed Donald Trump on Thursday as the president prepares to roll out his latest set of proposals for the national immigration system.
Reports on the president’s upcoming speech suggest that he will call for increased border security and will not offer any further protections to DACA DREAMers. The proposal will also supposedly focus on reducing family-based immigration in favor of merit-based migration, a system which gives priority to highly skilled immigrants.
In remarks to reporters, Pelosi acknowledged that comprehensive immigration reform is necessary, even as she said Democrats have yet to receive any formal briefing on the new proposal. Eventually, Pelosi took issue with the reported plan, calling merit-based immigration a “condescending word” to apply on migrants.
“Are they saying family is without merit?” Pelosi asked. “Are they saying most of the people that come to the United States in the history of our country are without merit because they don’t have an engineering degree?”
Pelosi continued by suggesting that merit-based migration would reduce America’s moral preeminence in the world and that the definition of “merit” here boils down to “merit in the eyes of Donald Trump.”
