The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, came to the baseball field with a list of three Republican congressmen, and opened fire on the practice, shooting “50 to 100 shots.”

Five people were injured in the shooting, most seriously was House Majority Whip Steve Scalisewho was shot in the hip and required surgery. Matt Mika, a former congressional staffer-turned-lobbyist, was also shot in the attack, with injuries in his chest and arm. Two Capitol Police officers were also shot in the attack, David Bailey and Crystal Griner.

According to Rep. Mo Brooks, the shooter wrecked havoc and continuously fired his semiautomatic rifle until Hodgkinson was shot by police. Senator Jeff Flake remembers not being able to move to help Scalise until Hodgkinson was shot, saying it felt like 10-15 minutes for the police to arrive.

Hodgkinson died at George Washington University Hospital later that day. Scalise was in critical condition and remained in the hospital until July 25, and is now starting rehabilitation. All other injured individuals have recovered.
