Republicans Are All Rainbows And Unicorns For April Fool’s Day

What is the first image that comes to mind when you hear the words “National Republican Party”? Thanks to Erik Brown, probably something inappropriate. But imagine the opposite of that, and you’ll get the latest “positive ad” from the NRSC, thanking Barack Obama for bringing unemployment down to -39% and investing in “low-emission unicorns.”

The ad celebrates the year and a half old Obama administration and their concrete solutions to all of today’s big issues: health care, unemployment, energy, and more. It’s “Morning Again in America” meets “Demon Sheep,” with equal hints of over-the-top optimism and strange flash animations. Then things turn foul, as the jubilant narrator snaps us back to reality. “Get real,” he snarls, as dramatic music and concerned construction workers take over the screen. The idea, the tone, and delivery couldn’t be more on target, not to mention that the “serious” part of the ad is perhaps the funniest because it looks like a Democratic parody of the Republican style. But it’s not a joke, especially to the party faithful.

It’s also impressive that the Michael Steele Republican Party is bouncing back from a rough week literally on the backs of unicorns. Watching the Steele School of Right-Wing Propaganda evolve from the original 2008 “Germans Love Obama” ad to this masterpiece is a delight for both sides of the aisle.
