Trayvon Attorney Responds To Zimmerman Lawyers’ Withdrawal, Cites Concern For Zimmerman’s ‘Flight Risk’
Following the announcement from George Zimmerman‘s lawyers that they are withdrawing as his counsel, Trayvon Martin‘s family’s attorney issued a statement to TIME. Benjamin Crump said the family is surprised — adding that their legal team had always warned that Zimmerman may “become a flight risk.”
Crump issued the following statement to TIME:
Trayvon’s family was always concerned that Zimmerman doesn’t try to skirt his legal responsibilities and become a flight risk. We always wanted this before a judge and a jury. We hope that [authorities] will take this under consideration that this a flight risk. If they go to press charges, is he really going to face them?
Zimmerman’s (former) lawyers said they are withdrawing after losing contact with Zimmerman. Additionally, they said Zimmerman contacted Fox News’ Sean Hannity directly (not through representation), and that the website through which he was seeking funds for the case was set up without seeking legal counsel.
