Watch: President Donald Trump Makes Joint Statement With Turkish President Erdogan
President Donald Trump is meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan today and will make a joint statement with the Turkish leader at 1:00 p.m. EST.
Erdogan is in D.C. to discuss a range of common challenges facing the two nations including the fights against ISIS and regional security.
Erdogan arrived in D.C. fresh off his narrow and controversial victory in a Turkish referendum which grants sweeping new powers to the president — in other words, himself. The move was widely seen as a power grab away from the Prime Minister and legislature.
The meeting is expected to be cordial. Trump even placed a congratulatory phone call to Erdogan after his victory in the referendum.
Whatever comes from the meeting is likely to be overshadowed by the ongoing scandals surrounding the firing of James Comey and new revelations that Trump revealed classified information to senior Russian officials. Already discrepancies are emerging between the president’s senior surrogate and the Commander-in-Chief himself.
Watch the Trump-Erdogan statements live above starting at 1:00 p.m. EST.
