Alan Dershowitz Rips Dems For Fueling Rumors That Trump Wants Mueller Fired
Amid ongoing speculation that Special Counsel Robert Mueller may be next in President Donald Trump‘s string of firings, Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Democrats are the ones fueling the fire.
“I can’t see any conceivable reason why the president would even consider firing Mueller,” Dershowitz told Fox News’s Sandra Smith in an interview Tuesday.
However, Dershowitz backed the president’s claims that Mueller should have never been hired in the first place.
“First of all, the President’s 100 percent right,” Dershowitz said. “There never should have been an appointment of special counsel and there was no probable cause at that point to believe that crimes have been committed. I’ve seen no evidence to suggest that crimes have been committed by the president.”
Meanwhile Trump has been rounding up his legal team, taking to Twitter Monday to call the Russia investigation “a total WITCH HUNT with massive conflicts of interest!”
That was only a day after a top White House lawyer tried to smooth over speculation that Trump was preparing to remove Mueller from office.
Dershowitz maintained that a firing would create problems on both sides of the aisle, and that the Russia probe should have been handled differently.
“As I said from day one, there should have been a special investigative commission, nonpartisan appointed by Congress with subpoena power, to look into the role of Russia in trying to influence American elections and to try to do something about preventing it in the future, instead of starting out with finger-pointing and trying to criminalize political differences behind the closed doors of a grand jury,” he said.
