Chuck Schumer Responds to Post-Shutdown Liberal ‘Anger’: ‘We’ve Advanced the Cause’

Rachel Maddow began her interview with Chuck Schumer tonight by asking him about the “anger” many on the left feel post-shutdown about how Democrats caved.

Schumer argued, “We’ve advanced the cause.”

He said that it’s difficult for Democrats because they don’t “have the levers of power,” saying “we got the best deal we could” from Mitch McConnell. He also noted how people don’t like shutdowns and they weren’t going to be happy about it continuing.

Schumer added Democrats shouldn’t be getting “in a circular firing squad.”

Maddow challenged him on the strategy, saying, “The way this fight unfolded doesn’t feel like it got us closer to solving” the problem DREAMers are facing.

Schumer responded, “If we have that attitude that we can never accomplish anything, we’ll lose.”

He said the Democrats will stand by the DREAMers and even referred to President Trump as “whimsical” because “he may wake up one morning and say, ‘Get this bill done.'”
