TMZ caught up with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer at Reagan National Airport shortly after the funeral for Sen. John McCain on Saturday.
Blitzer first called McCain “a great American and a great patriot.”
Then, when asked about daughter Meghan McCain‘s remarks at the funeral — which were seen as a direct swipe at President Donald Trump — Blitzer said he agreed with what she said.
“In my opinion,” Blitzer said, “America is a great country, the greatest country in the world.”
The TMZ reporter then asked Blitzer if America has always been great, prompting the CNN newsman to say this: “America’s always been — we’ve made mistakes, it’s always been great.”
During the funeral, Ms. McCain took a thinly veiled jab at Trump, first saying this: “We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness — the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served.”
Then, more directly Ms. McCain added this, taking aim at Trump’s MAGA claims: “The America of John McCain is generous and welcoming and bold… The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great.”
