Katy Tur: The ‘Principled Brand of Republican Politics That John McCain Embodied Is Gone’
Katy Tur opened today’s MTP Daily with a blunt message about the current state of the Republican party as the nation mourns the passing of John McCain.
“The bipartisan, truth-seeking, country-first, principled brand of Republican politics that John McCain embodied is gone,” she said. “Replaced by a populist brand of reality-TV-show truth-isn’t-truth base-pounding politics that is pretty much the opposite of everything John McCain stood for.”
Tur noted President Donald Trump repeatedly ignoring reporters’ shouted questions today about McCain before finally issuing a statement today heralding the late senator’s life and service.
She said right now the country is navigating an environment of “blindingly intense partisanship” without such a “revered statesman” who, as Tur noted, seemed to be pushing back against Trumpism in the farewell statement friend Rick Davis read aloud today.
Tur concluded, “And while that bipartisan truth-seeking country-first principled brand of Republican politics that John McCain embodied is gone, it does not have to die with him.”
