At the end of his tax reform pitch to truckers in Pennsylvania today, President Donald Trump brought up a topic he has been spending quite a bit of time discussing of late — the American flag.
After talking about how he’d improve the nation’s highways in the near future, stating they will be “smooth, beautiful highways again,” the president then segued into waxing poetic about Old Glory.
“Do we love our American flag?” Trump asked the crowd to thunderous applause.
“I think people forgot how patriotic we are,” Trump continued. “I think people forgot how much we love our country.”
He then seemingly referenced recent reports that the NFL will change its rules to make its players stand during the playing of the national anthem. “I think they have learned over the last week, haven’t they?” POTUS declared, adding that “our cities and towns will proudly display the flag.”
The president has spent the past few weeks taking aim at NFL athletes for kneeling during the anthem as a way to protest racial injustice. Trump pushed the issue into the forefront of the national conversation when he said owners should fire any “son of a bitch” that knelt.
