AP Source: FBI Opens Investigation Into News Corp., 9/11 Allegations

video

The Associated Press is reporting that the FBI has opened an investigation into allegations Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp. sought to hack into the phones of 9/11 victims. The AP’s Tom Hays, citing “a law enforcement official” says the investigation comes as New York-based News Corp. is “in crisis mode.”

According to the AP, the FBI’s New York office has not commented, nor has News Corp. or the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan.

This is getting very interesting, indeed.

I imagine to most FOX “News” fans that Murdoch hacking into 9/11victims and families’ phones will be the fault of the victims and families, but it looks like Murdoch is going to be like a chicken on a hot plate for some time to come.

I’m very worried that this culture of corruption that exists within NewsCorp has infected Fox News or the New York Post. One must ask themselves why would these seedy, heinous journalistic standards merely exist within NewsCorp on the other side of the pond? Fox has been very aggressive attempting to engineer a scandal since Obama rose to power in 2008. Did Ailes advise or allow any subordinates to break laws while pushing the Bill Ayers, birth certificate, or Common the rapper stories? These are very open, unanswered questions. I hope that Fox News was able to temper their desires to demonize Obama and promote the Republican party by acting responsibly in their journalism. I hope that the FBI fully lifts the hood on Murdoch’s empire. Where there is smoke there is fire. And there just may be a lot more fire that we don’t know about.

Before the blame and finger pointing start, it might matter to know that the FBI investigation is in response to a letter from conservative Republican Peter King. There goes today’s pass the blame chorus.

See the person that represents New York in Congress asked for an investigation into a possible federal crime against his constituents. And for today’s serving of irony sauce on this goose,King is a regular and a favorite over at Fox, yet ge called in the Feds on them.

So, what is the substance of the AP report?

“A law enforcement official says the FBI has opened an investigation into allegations media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. sought to hack into the phones of Sept. 11 victims.

The official spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly….

The decision to investigate was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King and several other members of Congress wrote FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly….

The official stressed that the probe was in its infancy but declined to discuss the scope of it or say whether any investigative steps had been taken…. ”

Will the FBI now investigate unauthorized leaking at its own agency?

And will the FBI investigate Operation Fast and Furious, or maybe there ought to be a special prosecutor, since the attorney general may be involved?

Exactly right. If Rupert Murdoch is criminally responsible for something that happened at the NOTW, which was part of News Group Newspapers, which is a branch of News International Ltd., which is a division of NewsCorp… then Barack Obama is criminally liable for the actions of a GS-9 at an BATFE office in Phoenix.

I’m really afraid to believe that’s true. But, sadly I don’t have serious doubts. The greatest press scandal of our lifetimes is going largely unnoticed on one of the networks. Fox never has fairly reported the news. As long as it is run by former GOP operatives, it will never change. Very sad.

When we paranoiac types talk about the tiny number of people who run the world, Murdoch is in the top echelon of these megalomaniacs who have done so much to divide and confuse us. In Britain, where he had enough power to intimidate nearly the entire population, once his power was broken, he suddely has zero friends except for family and his top business associates. He hacked into thousands of people private lives, and, who knows yet, whether he was able to do that here. Murdoch’s power in this country has not been nearly as great, but this episode has been a wake up call for all Americans. There is nothing redeeming about most of Murdoch’s media operations here except, and, maybe, except for the Wall Street Journal. The damage and insult that he’s done in this country can best be summed up by Glenn Beck, who, if you haven’t noticed has almost disappeared from sight, and it doesn’t look like his Blaze media venture will have a long life either. Beck is a dangerous psychopath who Murdoch harnessed inorder to pander to the lowest common denominator with great success until Beck’s craziness began driving away national advertisers who did not want to be associated with the unstable Beck ‘image’. One can only hope that with the wounding of Murdoch, we may be seeing the beginning of the end of the recently resurgent rightwing power.

    1) Crimes were committed in the period 2002-2006 (might have started earlier, not sure)
    2) NOTW employees were arrested and jailed in 2006 and 2007.
    3) People whose voicemails were hacked were compensated.

All of this was public knowledge. The press association knew it, and the Metropolitan Police knew it.

It was believed that all the guilty parties had been fired and arrested.

In January of 2011, James Murdoch or someone acting on his behalf gave evidence to the Metropolitan Police, showing that other people at NOTW were involved. Murdoch blew the whistle on his own newspaper.

Nobody was pretending that the voicemail hacking had not occurred. No one was hiding the fact that victims were being compensated.

Very good post. I’d be interested to know Beck’s true reaction to the mess at Newscorp. In my opinion, he is a very vain and presumptuous man. He probably has some type of narcissistic personality disorder given how highly he views his capabilities (restoring courage to the country of Israel, etc.) So I’m sure Beck was furious for being fired by Fox. Is there some serious schadenfreude pouring out from him right over the fate of Murdoch’s empire? Probably so even if he doesn’t express so on air.

We know the media HATES FNC with a passion because it is the only network that provides a different perspective, doesn’t belong to the group think/liberal mindmeld practiced at the other “news” organs, and so they are reporting and reporting and reporting on this, while ignoring anything big and bad associated with HE HIMSELF, the manchild idiot in chief.
