Glenn Beck’s Mercury Radio Arts Enters The Internet Discount Biz

Today, Mercury Radio Arts, conservative radio and television host Glenn Beck‘s production company, is set to announce that it’s entering the discount e-commerce business with the launch of Markdown.com. The site comes at a time when discount sites, like Groupon and LivingSocial, are offering deeply discounted daily deals on everything from restaurant meals to bikini waxes. Markdown (Slogan: “Value and Values”) will offer one or two discounts per week.

The Wall Street Journal
says the new website will offer two preliminary deals: a 10 dollar voucher for 20 dollars’ worth of chocolate from Chocolate.com, as well as a 55 percent discount on “a credit-score monitoring product” by LifeLock.

Beck himself has said he was inspired to form the company as a way of helping out small businesses.

Interestingly, the news of a Fox News personality launching a new business – written up by a publication also owned by the channel’s parent company, News Corp. – comes out the same week that New York magazine released its story on Fox News chairman Roger Ailes… an article which kicks off with details of Ailes’ contentious talks with Beck, who, as you likely know, is set to leave the network.

I guess the mad man is not making enough money hoarding gold. I guess this is why he despise Mrs Obama lecturing about weight gaining, its because it would affect his chocolate business.

Idiot teabaggers don’t mind throwing their money at Beck. If only he’d give them all a kiss goodnight. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA * all the way to HELL***

That’s it? Media Matters only sent you guys that load of crap, but you went with it anyway?

Even Kraft Mac & Cheese, although edible right out of the box, can always use a few add ons like extra cheese, cut up hot dogs, etc.

MEDIAite really ought to check out Glenn’s weekly deals, then get Dan to cut loose with a little K to purchase some ‘ add ons ‘ for next time. Plus those chocolates look delicious, don’t they?

Seems like a good move. Gotta love corporatism. :)

Reportedly, one of the problems that GroupOn and LivingSocial has been experiencing is the lack of repeat advertisers and it’s compounded by the fact that individual deals go to specific cities.

Without having access to Beck’s business plan, I’d say that he probably avoids the need for a large, localized sales force because Markdown seems better suited for national campaigns. Another of the problems with the other two competitors is that their coupon-buying market is also geographically limited, while I don’t have any stats, but I’m going to guess that Beck’s base is more diverse.

Again, I don’t know how it’s structured, but if it’s going to remain limited to just being advertised on the Mercury Arts sites, my gut says that it’s more akin to Google’s Adwords and it’s mostly a way to monetize adspace based upon the consumer’s reaction. IOW: It may not cost an advertiser to participate in the program because the space will be purchased by Markdown and Markdown will make their money when someone buys a coupon, so it’s sort of an accounting and ad-incentive trick.

Sounds like a good plan to me. They won’t need a huge, localized salesforce and it’s a way for advertisers to reach Beck’s audience without an upfront outlay.

There’s an interesting sales hook here, in the form of a reward for referrals. Apparently, your purchase is not finalized until a particular deal closes. In the meantime, you can refer friends to the deal and for each friend who buys it, you get 10% off the price of your purchase. So, if you refer 10 friends, you pay nothing at the end of the deal.

I don’t see the details of exactly how that will work, but if it does and does so profitably, it’s clever.

Out of curiosity, what part of what they wrote is false? I’ve never heard of markdown so I’m kind of out of the loop.

@Pablo: As I understand the model, the other companies take a percentage cut of the coupon purchase. I assume Beck’s deal is structured the same way.

So, say, if you buy a $10 coupon, Markdown would get $3 and again, I’m not privy to the details, but if you were to make one referral, Markdown’s cut would go down to $2.70 and on down the line. So, if you were to maximize out with 10 referrals (using the above numbers), Markdown would bank $30 and the advertiser would get $70, therefore eating your $3 and $7 respectively doesn’t seem like a big deal.

The story is written from a left wing point of view. The last paragraph which basically makes no sense at all, leaves more questions than answers, and suggests possibly ( what ) sinister underpinnings to a simple, straight forward, but Glenn Beck business ventue.

I wish him Godspeed and all the luck in the world, even though he doesn’t need me to do well.

Disclaimer: Again, I’m just guessing and haven’t seen the business plan or contract.

Get your survival seeds today (and pay triple what you would at the store).

There’s a sucker born every day, and Beck is a master at taking their money.

I can see how the last paragraph would lead to that idea…though, I personally don’t read it as attempting to make this thing sound like a sinister plot. I read it as a suggestion of a collaborative effort to viral-market a product or a future venture.

Magister, I get the math of it. I was referring to the mechanics, specifically how referrals can be made and how they’re tracked. A mildly popular blogger could probably grab every deal for free while driving 10 buyers to the seller…who in turn will drive their own referrals.

Did you send Glenn Beck money for seeds, bunky? That was probably a bad idea. He doesn’t sell seeds.

  • bealzebubba

He’s mistaken Glenn for the other conspiracy guy, Alex Jones.

  • cyberk9sheriff

ah,,,the one who will simle the most is the one who has a lot of coffee, sugar and a lot of food to eat. I don’t think you could give a few I see in here any seed and them know what to do with it., Let alone care for it at the time to reap. Thank God I’m a country boy. Got my food got, my guns, and always got some fun,
Sleep Lefty…..sleep….it’s all just a bad drem there is no Beck..there is no problem in OUR gov….ah..sleep

    The reactionary Beckerhead, Pablo, says:

“Did you send Glenn Beck money for seeds, bunky?”

I’m sorry; I was not addressing uneducated suckers who defend the liar, hypocrite and charlatan Glenn Beck. You may go back into Plato’s cave now. I hear Beck is giving another tour of un-Enlightenment.

    Beck is a false-prophet:
