Jon Stewart Goes After Political Sex Scandals And Hypocrisy

video

This is the reason why Jon Stewart and The Daily Show deserve all the accolades they receive: they take a topic that would be so very banal in the hands of any one else, and make it far more entertaining and informative with their own treatment. In this instance the topic is political sex scandals and the associative and hypocritical rhetoric that follows.

The list of examples in the following clip is rather stunning: Larry Craig, Mark Foley, David Vitter, John Ensign and Eric Massa are all exemplified for their alleged inappropriate behavior. Dennis Hastert, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner get special shout outs for their inconsistent rhetoric.

By the way, the following segment once again begs the question: why is The Daily Show consistently the only place to find such segments that feature a selection of well-researched and historical clips? Shouldn’t traditional news outlets be doing this also?

    Aazrk,
I don’t think Stewart really had time in that clip to cover all the political sex scandals through the years. His piece was not limited to criticism of Republicans. In fact, he took on the conservative’s favorite great satan of the House, Nancy Pelosi. I think Stewart, in his way, was asking for accountability for all improper behavior. Though, of course, an accusation does not mean that someone was guilty, and that is why they have investigations.

Would you agree that our politicians, on both sides of the isle, are at least partisan and inconsistent, if not hypocritical, in how they view such scandals? And that was Stewart’s point.

It’s not even up for debate that Republicans have more sex scandals. And many of Azhartkant’s examples are decades old, which just points out how much you are grasping at straws.

The real difference in these cases, besides the “liberal media” fascination with Democratic scandals, is that Democrats are always pressured to resign, while Republicans get a pass in only the most egregious cases, like Foley. Usually this is because these dirty Republicans reside in Republican strongholds, where most voters more closely mimic the blind partisanship and head-in-the-sand stupidity of those like Arzharkant and Democrats for the most part don’t have the seething, blind, hypocritical constant outrage that Republicans do towards Democrats in similar situations.

Since 1998, the year of the Clinton scandal, here’s a partial list of Republican sex scandals:

    Mark Sanford
    John Ensign
    Vito Fossella
    Larry Craig
    David Vitter
    Newt Gingrich
    Mark Foley
    Don Sherwood
    Rudy Guiliani
    Henry Hyde
    Dan Burton
    Helen Chenoweth

Most were not forced from office, nor did most of them even suffer political fallout.

In other words, if you never claim to have morals in the first place, you can’t be accused of acting immorally.
