Rick Santorum Goes After Obama On Faith: His Agenda Is Based On ‘Phony Theology’

Rick Santorum has used the past week of media focus on social issues to his advantage, by branding himself as the strong, family-values social conservative who stands up for what he believes. This has resulted in Santorum becoming the frontrunner in the GOP race once again, while Newt Gingrich struggles to be heard in the race. While speaking at a Christian conference yesterday, Santorum criticized the president’s moral compass, suggesting his entire agenda was based on a “phony theology.”

Santorum was careful not to attack President Obama‘s religious convictions per se, acknowledging that “there are a lot of different stripes of Christianity” and if Obama “says he’s a Christian, he’s a Christian.” But his political opponents were quick to jump on these comments and criticize Santorum for being so personal.

The Obama campaign said the comments represent “the latest low in a Republican primary campaign that has been fueled by distortions, ugliness, and searing pessimism and negativity.”

During his speech, Santorum also went after Romney for “bail[ing] out the Salt Lake City Olympic Games” in 2002 when he was the president and CEO of the Olympic Organizing Committee. He criticized Romney for asking for an earmark worth millions of dollars from Congress, but the Romney campaign was quick to fire back that Santorum had not exactly been averse to earmarks when he served in the Senate.

A Santorum candidacy would be the natural outgrowth of the GOP’s far right Christianist tilt, and I say, bring it on. This is the only way the Republican party is ever going to break the fever that’s gripped it for more than two decades. A huge electoral defeat this November by Santorum would be the best thing for the party — and needless to say, the country.

The government should get out of the marriage business, and the churches should stop trying to use government to favor their religion over other religions.

In Europe there were centuries of warfare because church authorities and civil governments did not understand the necessity of a strict separation between church and state. One of the glorious things about the U.S. has been its separation between church and state, which is essential for religious liberty.

Hey Rick. The President swears on the bible to protect the constitution. Not the other way around.

I can’t help but wonder after Santorum’s pious I-can-judge-Obama-as-a not-worthy-Christian-in-name-only whether he now will take the time to show his stillborn campaign to his children.

Obama just said that his budget coincides with Jesus’s teachings. That is Obama inserting religion into politics, so let’s not forget his version of Christianity proclaims GOD DAMN AMERICA.

Ah yes, we all know the true theology is that of the right, you know, the people who seem to cherry pick the old testament to justify their own bigotry and have reduced Jesus to a minor player in his own faith, only really wheeling him out when they need something to hide behind or to slap on a bumper sticker. :)

You know the types, the ones who happily eat pork, wear mixed fabrics and get haircuts while claiming homosexuality is wrong because it says so in Leviticus, happily ignoring every other thing that is forbidden in there. People like these, like Mr. Santorum, they truly are on the right path as there’s no doubt that they follow the message of tolerance and forgiveness that was taught by Jesus and as such, they’re.well placed to pass judgement on others. :)

On Tuesday (Monday is a holiday), mortgage everything of value in your name. Then call up your stock broker and buy as much stock in Orville Redenbacher you can. This clown fest is only going to get better and as a result, popcorn sales should skyrocket. But it goes much further than Saint Rick’s latest venture into the self-righteous. Newton was dissed by Saint Rick and Mittens, so he is really mad. The only question now is whether these idiots will carry more than 100 electoral votes.

I love when he delivers the phony theology line you hear silence from the crowd, until you hear him say not the theology from the Bible you can hear the crowd breathe a sigh of relief.

Previous elections don’t support this narrative : the establishment picked Ford in 1976 and Bush in 1980, because Ronald Reagan was ‘too’ conservative and ‘unelectable’ ; in 1996, another moderate, sen. Dole, and in 2008, sen. McCain, were both defeated.

Remember that Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater were once considered extremists. But today we are told (even by msnbc) that Reagan was at the left of Obama. The same Obama who continued the policies of Cheney on terrorism, lowered taxes even below what there were under Clinton and made a healthcare reform whose inspiration was taken from Republicans and Heritage Foundation. My point is that the conservative movement won the battle of ideas, even when they lost elections (like in 1968 or 1996).

That’s why whoever wins in november (Obama or Romney) does not matter. Obama has already accepted the republican philosophy (he said that just like families government cannot spend money they don’t have) and if you look at his last budget he wants to lower the taxes on business. To make a grand bargain in july, he already moved to the right of simpsons-bowles and the gang of six. When reelected, he will drop his idea to raise more revenues through a tax hike, and will compromise on tax reform and spending cuts. So… Who cares if the GOP lost the WH again ? On the issues, a fierce and effective opposition to whatever the left has done since McGovern, has moved the conversation to the right. You should thank the conservative movement.

yes only rick and a few repubs are true christians—except for the fact that they support no policy that would perpetuate the teachings of the Christ…

Before Santorum pursues his goal of
becoming president, he should read the Constitution of the United States of
    America:

    Article Six: The Senators and
Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State
Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United
States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to
support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a
Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

and then he turns around and trashes both.

Let’s not forget that Ghandi was also a supporter of Hitler during WWII because of his disdain for the British.

  • mac691

What total BUNK.  Obama was attempting to state that his brand of a welfare state is supported by the Gospels.  Obama has much more in common with Karl Marx than he does with Jesus Christ.

Phoney theology??? There you go again Rick. Like a good little right wing extremist, you are trying to back peddle away from your phoney extremist right theological views to try and explain your meanings. Hey Rick…..we get it. You are just another right wing extremist who mixes twisted skewed religious ideologies with twisted skewed right wing political ideologies…..both of which never cross paths with reality. The Bush administration has already done this. We get it and we know exactly what you are. After attending 2 separate Southern Baptist Univerities for degrees in Religion, I saw a lot of flakes like you who are simply slaves and victims to stupidity and twisted ideologies that have no basis in reality. The problem with right wingers and most evangelicals is the fact that they have an “us and them” mentality which makes it easy to think you are better than others and that others have phoney theologies. Hey Rick, you are nothing more than an old cliche. Idiots like you and Ann Coulter need to wake up to the fact that the Taliban already perfected the mindset and thought processes that you guys are only now scratching the surface of when you attempt to dupe people every time you open your big mouths. You are way behind the curve.

  • BooBoo Bear

Perhaps you should follow Christ’s words then…”Sell all your possessions and follow me”.

  • BooBoo Bear

Mac you need to explain yourself a whole lot more than you do..We have no idea at all what you mean by those words.

What does that have to do with his quote?

    Hitler has quotes as well.

  • Anonymous

Let’s not forget that India was once a British colony and perhaps Ghandi felt that good reason to wish for their demise. I have not researched the Ghandi/Hitler connection. However, if you are true to form here I would need to see the quote or whatever you use to reach your conclusions.
