Sanchez may have done well by CNN standards, but he still finished in last place for the 8pm hour (in both demo and totals) beaten by O’Reilly, O’Donnel (filling in for Olbermann) and Nancy Grace. Poor CNN, the one-time cable news “most trusted name in new” channel is now slowly doing itself in.

  • straitshooter

    Really Joe Coscarelli? Really?

This is the analysis you came up with after looking at these ratings?

Sanchez finished fourth (that’s dead last) in his time slot, so the significance of how he stacks up against the rest of CNN’s stable of losers hardly seems worth the lead headline on this web site.

It’s time that Mediaite, given its chosen focus, locked its sights on CNN for a hard-hitting story on why the management of this network has not been held responsible for this disastrous post-election belly flop.

  • straitshooter

Was this Coscarelli’s piece or Krakauer’s? Originally, it had Coscarelli’s byline, and I only want to berate the chowderhead responsible for this dreck.

Jeffrey Smuzinick could not be reached for comment.

Usually it’s Krakauer who does the ratings re-cap.

As for the headline… I understand what Steve is going for. You can’t write, “FOX News Wins Primetime” every single day… that gets tedious and boring. So, the headline gets re-written to highlight something else… perhaps grab an extra eyeball or two. The problem is the ratings aren’t really a contest anymore… FNC dominates, MSNBC comes in second, and CNN third… so writing new and exciting headlines is a bit of a challenge. Anyway… the numbers tell the story, not the headlines.

  • straitshooter

Blue, you are right about the reasoning, but when the headline is this much of a stretch, I think it hurts the web site’s credibility. Instead, they should just issue a “Daily Ratings Report” and only include analysis when it is merited.

  • http://mediaite.com Steve Krakauer

It was my analysis, not Joe’s.

You can berate me, buddy. Look, we try to find new angles when looking at the ratings. You think we’re being easy on CNN? It doesn’t take long to see some of our analysis on the subject of CNN and their sagging ratings.

I’m Not Blue is right on here…

  • straitshooter

I don’t think you’re taking it easy on CNN. I think it is disingenuous to pretend there are ANY bright spots on CNN’s schedule.

  • http://glassbead.info Magister

I like the analysis. Sometimes I glance at the stats, but the words are the only thing I always read.

  • libra blue

The real story is that Nancy Grace has beaten every CNN prime time program in both the demo and the total viewers for the entire week! Where’s the post about that?

  • TfT

And newsbusters is reporting that Sanchez pushed the Stupak amendment as that of a “conservative republican”….problem of course is that Stupak is a democrat, in his 8th term in congress. So it’s not like he is a new kid on the block. Sanchez shows why CNN is in fourth place — can’t report the facts.

  • libra blue

@ImNotBlue, I agree, reading FNC wins again doesn’t grab anyone’s attention anymore so I can understand the creative headline. The funny thing about it is that CNN is in such denial that they have bad ratings that they might see this post as a positive thing.

Maybe someone should analyze why FNC is winning all the time. I have my ideas, but I’d be interested in hearing what everyone else thinks.

  • MartiniShark

Part of me moans at the thought of this cement-head getting tabbed for prime-time, but part of me also looks forward to a promotion. We have ridiculed the man for years since he was a talking-head in Miami. During hurricane Andrew the home I bunkered in had his station on around the clock and at least twice he referred to it as an earthquake. He is a human highlight dolt. Just look for the video of him testing out a taser – comedic catharsis!

  • same2u

    Straitshooter,
I am interested in commentaries about the ratings and not the ratings itself. There are plenty of interesting observations about the ratings other than the fact Fox News is winning each night. Now grow up or get lost..

  • em

CNN needs a big change ! The biggest problem is the same reports played over and over, all day and all night. New talent is needed. Larry King is the only show i watch !

  • TfT

The “real journalists” at CNN continue down their road to irrelevance. Malvaux, filling in for the biggest CNN jeopardy loser, goes down the “teabagger” route and calls our democracy in action “circus atmosphere”. Yup — that kind of straight news, “real journalism” will bring the viewers back to CNN.

  • em

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Keith Olbermann …..of course Twitter and Mediaite ! all the news you need

CNN’s Rick Sanchez Hit-and-Run DUI, leaves victim Jeffrey Smuzinick paralyzed

DO YOU MEAN THIS RICK SANCHEZ? What a great human being. I guess if you’re a CNN media star you get a free pass when drunk while driving.

    Steve K,

I’m not sure exactly the point you’re trying to make here or why you chose this angle as the most “useful” to write about.

Looking back the last 8 Fridays from beginning of October, The Friday 8pm CNN time slot in the a25-a54 demo has beaten the other CNN prime slots 3 times, including the Sanchez fill in week in your article. I’m not sure for other days of the week, but I was just trying to do apples to apples. The other weeks this same thing happened was the previous week of 11/13 and October 30th

The other interesting angle you might want to note is the CNN 9/10pm slots in same 8 week period had much larger share than the week you noted execpt of course for the 3 times the 8pm slot beat out the others.

Meaning other Fridays since October generally have much higher demo share than the week you detailed. Or another way is the Friday you highlighted on average the 9/10pm CNN slots had big drops in viewers.

King on Fridays since October has averaged 191 in the a24-a54 and Cooper has averaged 182 on those same Fridays. So the Friday you highlighted the 9/10 pm slots share was much lower than the norm.

Once again, analysis, but not sure what the story is. In context, what do you want your readers to take away from this besised Rick Sanchez filled in for Brown?

  • Jim Treacher

When I Tivo CNN, I fast-forward to the commercials.
