Santorum Staffer: Obama’s Energy Decisions Determined By His ‘Radical Islamic Policies’

video

Man, fans of Rick Santorum just don’t have good luck when they go on Andrea Mitchell’s show. Less than a week after Foster Friess‘ unfortunate stand-up routine, Alice Stewart, the National Press Secretary of Santorum’s campaign, had what we’re assuming was a slip up on the show when she blamed President Obama’s energy decisions on his “radical Islamic policies.”

Stewart was on the show to discuss the scrutiny that Santorum is now under as a potential GOP frontrunner. Mitchell asked her why Santorum tried to frame his differences with the President as a difference in values, specifically in comments that had been pointed out by Robert Gibbs. This was her response:

“[Santorum] wasn’t questioning the President’s character. He wasn’t questioning the President’s religion. As he said, he clarified the statement, he was talking about radical environmentalists. There is a type of theological secularism when it comes to the global warmists of the country. That’s what he was referring to. He was referring to the President’s policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the President has specifically in terms of energy exploration. Case in point, the Keystone Pipeline.”

Shortly after, Stewart called into the show to explain that that wasn’t what she meant. However, that wasn’t the end of it. To make matters worse, News Nation, which came on the air next, devoted an entire panel to questioning whether Stewart made an honest mistake or not.

We’re going to assume that she did. Here’s how I think it happened. Just this past weekend, the New York Times Magazine published a lengthy article about the way the brain breaks down difficult tasks into easily repeatable habit packs so that you can do them over and over again without expanding too much brain power, using as examples a rat in a maze and a person learning how to back a car out of a driveway.

People who work for the campaigns of the GOP candidates have to trash President Obama a lot. It only makes sense that their brains would package it into easy habits filled with buzzwords like “socialist” and “radical Islam” even if they have absolutely no connection to the conversation at hand. Stewart probably wasn’t attempting some kind of deceptive fear-mongering. She was just a political rat stuck in a campaign maze and trying to get to the White House cheese.

Wow they really got amateurs in the GOP campaign for President. We on the left LOVE are candidate! The GOP is just a bunch of sad losers with no chance of winning anything for the foreseeable future.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Isn’t that the truth. Guffaws happen in the best of campaigns, but Sanitarium seems to have serial “mistakers”. Unless, it wasn’t a mistake ….

    theological secularism???

Is that something like Fox News?

  • Anonymous

It’s quiet telling the terms that are unconsciously applied to this dictator!!!!!!

Here is a term you will never hear applied to Obama “radical Christian”

  • Anonymous

Orwell pointed out in “Politics and The English Language” that propaganda requires no thought. A good propagandist just opens her mouth and the words fall out. It was interesting that Andrea Mitchell didn’t even notice the “gaffe”.

Also, what is “theological secularism when it comes to global warmists”? They’re called scientists.

I absolutely agree its a misspeak moment, unlike Romney not caring about the poor and then being asked followups to clarify.

The problem I have with this misspeak, is that it continues the drum beat about the radical islamic nonsense that the Right continues to play.  I appreciate that she called to correct her statement, thats commendable.  But its just another example of the drip drip drip that republicans continue to do to erode away the belief that Obama is an American just like the rest of us.

And with it on the heels of Santorum’s flub, I’m dubious but I tend to lean toward the benefit of the doubt, even if its not returned in kind

  • Anonymous

That’s what happens when you get your talking points mixed up.  If it makes Alice feel any better, it all sounded like psycho babble.

    Thank god for that.

She should have just admitted that she believes the president is a socialist atheistic Black Muslim.

Its really fun to see the entire Republican Party self destruct right before our eyes.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Since early October 2008, when it was clear that McCain’s vice presidential pick had dashed the slight hopes he had of winning, Republicans have been on a relentless, persistent, vicious course to delegitimize, even dehumanize President Obama, his Administration and his family. It is a mindset most of these people can’t get out of. If this were a mistake, he was a well cultivated one.

This is what happens when some of the more extreme people on the the right begin talking in places where people will actually examine what they say. In some rightist circles, calling the president’s policies radically Islamic wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow.

    “Radical Islamic policies”?
Why should that even be a talking point in your brain?

Poor Obama, he somehow has to balance his time by being involved in Islam, Christianity, and, according to some, atheism.

For my money i can’t recall, at least in the last 30 years, where a presidents religion has not only been dissected but it also morphs into the complete opposite of religion while  at the same time simultaneously going into one of the more committed ones.

And for the life of me i can’t understand why people keep flubbing stuff like this on Andrea Mitchell’s show, its not like she asked about Islamic policies, this was an easy question to answer that somehow turned into a discussion involving Islam.

This is where I’m very happy to not be associated with a political party, if my party kept pulling stuff like this on a CONSISTENT basis, I’d probably leave.

  • Anonymous

Hilarious. Maybe others are figuring out that all you have to do is throw anything out there truthful or not. And let the media run with it. It seems to work for Barry and his sheep. As are his economic policies, his preacher, his wife, his spending, his spreading the wealth socialism, cronyism, his hatred of the US Constitution is only second to Supreme Court, Ginsburg’s, afterall.

And it shall be written in the history books of our nations future, when there existed a major political party in the United States, which thrived for over a century, only to be undone by the radical extremists and all the others who because of their own rogue beliefs gravitated to the party that best expressed their fear of nearly everything that was not exactly like them. History will laud the accomplishments of many great Republicans throughout our nations history, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt but will tell the sad tale of a party who allowed it’s fear destroy it from within.

These are the final days of the Republican Party, a party that has done everything it can to alienate the largest growing voting block in our country and doesn’t care. The Republican Party has a death wish and it is doing it’s best to see that it doesn’t exist for very much longer.

I wonder if its developing into a trend that over the top statements that drive Liberals absolutely insane seem to only be occurring on NBC?  Maybe their strategy is the opposite of preaching to the choir, since they know no matter what they say NBC will label them extremist.  Its a silly suggestion I know, but I think its hilarious and a great idea for Mel Gibson to follow it up by going on Isreali TV and telling them what he thinks of Jews when he’s drunk :)

I’m sure she misspoke (or she’s paid by Obama’s campaign under the table), but as others have wondered, how does she make this Freudian slip? Why would “islamic” even be in her brain?

NDanielson, are you a little worried about the possibility that Obama is going to be reelected? Obviously anything is possible. We could be under a Paul administration in 2013.

Do you also ever worry that Obama is getting a huge asset from people like you? The GOP trying to cater to your absolutely outrageous personal hatred of him is just a boon to his campaign. There are so many things he can be attacked on. Yet, here we are in late February and the headlines are dominated by ex-Sen. ManOnDog and the war on women’s rights.

I agree that he could be classified as suicidal as well, it is well documented that he stopped a block before he got to the Federal building to light the 5 minute fuse. A hole had been cut in the box of the rental truck to the cab and when he lit it, he had no idea if he would actually have 5 minutes or not. He was ready to die right then and there if the fuse suddenly took off and detonated the bomb before he reached his destination.

  • NDanielson

Hey, we could learn a lot about Barry’s thoughts on Christianity, abortion, and gay marriage if we could just ask his preacher of 20 years his thoughts on such things! Last I heard he was holed up in a multi-million dollar mansion in a gated white community in…From Christopher Hitchins:

On the same weekend as I was reading Nicholson Baker, I also absorbed a
news item about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the recently retired pastor of
Barack Obama’s church in Chicago. Here is the form that the reverend’s
“retirement” will take: a $1.6 million home, purchased in the name of
his church and consisting of more than 10,000 square feet, in a gated
community in Tinley Park, a prosperous white section of the city. There
used to be a secularist line about fat shepherds and thin sheep, but the
joke here is not just at the expense of a man who never pretended to be
much more than a hustler. The joke is on those of the “flock” who
tithed themselves to achieve this level of comfort for a man who must be
pinching himself when he wakes up every day.

A rich, white, gated community. Home bought and paid for by the church :D

    Chicago Tribune story (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-wright-house_29mar29,1,5648817.story)

And what does the United Church of Christ’s headquarters think of Wright’s new home?

“It is customary and appropriate in many Christian denominations, including the United Church of Christ, for local churches to offer housing provisions for retiring clergy, especially in cases where pastors have served long-term pastorates. We support efforts by our 5,700 local churches to ensure that retiring pastors and spouses have continuing housing, adequate pension and health care, as an expression of our continuing appreciation for their years of service. Each local UCC congregation is free to honor a retiring pastor in ways it feels most appropriate to address the needs of that clergyperson’s circumstances,” wrote the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, spokesman for UCC’s national office.

Well, here’s what I think. She said “islamic” because that’s a pretty standard rightwing talking point.

Now, your rebuttal is that Obama said 57 states…..because he’s been to 56 Islamic states? And he only wants to go to one more? And then what?

I won’t recognize xtian, but as to the latter I don’t give a hoot what Obama’s religion is.

So, you are saying President Obama is NOT a Christian.
And aside of that, you wouldn’t have ANY problems voting for a MUSLIM candidate if somehow he/she could fit your criteria for a good American president. Right?

Since I do USE my ideology as a guiding principle in politics,  I don’t give a sht if other clownservative morons try to label President Obama as acting on “Radical Islamic Policies” because such do not exist.

Here is my main point. That moron lady speaking for Santorum said something extremely stupid. She was told she made a mistake and had to come back to clarify.

What does that have to do with your claim regarding

I wonder if its developing into a trend that over the top statements
that drive liberals absolutely insane seem to only be occurring on NBC?
Maybe their strategy is the opposite of preaching to the choir, since
they know no matter what they say NBC will label them extremist.

It is HER fault she made a stupid statement speaking for Santorum.
Don’t blame NBC or us Liberals and Progressives for scoring points when wingnutz mess up.

It is reduction at absurdum. Very simple.

How can a President, who says he is a Christian, and even Santorum takes his word, can be implementing “Radical Islamic Policies”?

    None at all!

But there are always the faithful wingnutz and trolls coming to defend what it is obviously a smear of President Obama.

Reverend Wright is U.S. Marine, & saw action for America as a U.S. Marine, & as a U.S. Marine non-com was assigned to President Johnson’s security detail at the Walter Reed Hospital. It’s not doing “damage to America” to report in a sermon that a U.S. ambassador told you the same thing that ambassador wrote in dispatches to the administration in Washington & in op-eds in the NY time, the Wall Street Journal & Foreign Policy magazine, to the effect that America’s policies towards the Middle East contributed to 9/11 taking place. It’s not doing “damage to America” to preach to your parishoners that the United States government has done things Jesus Christ spoke out against & that U.S. government actors have authorized & order & done things inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

What it is that Reverend Wright EVER did, that did ANY damage to America?

I watched the clip he offered which is only 18 seconds long and is captioned as the following: “Is it another Obama gaffe or a Freudian slip?”

I comprehended the poster’s comment and video clip which he provided to imply that Obama made a slip of the tongue and inadvertanly admitted he was of the muslim faith. If you read some of the 8,188 comments associated with the video, it would seem that several people agreed with the person who uploaded it.

Obviously if you watch the entire interview, you can see that this passage was taken out of context. Therefore my response to his post was meant to be a sarcastic comment on his view. Get it, or do you need help with implied sarcasm.

No sense arguing this-you’ll always insist your guns are days away from being taken and your great-grandkids will inherit them someday. You do realize you aren’t governed by the UN, right? That stands for United Nations-you live in the United STATES. I thought I’d point that out since your spelling caused me to be concerned as to your ability to answer that question.

No, I understand exactly what you mean. You think if she slips about the “islamic” than that’s the same as the “57 states.”

I don’t this flack or anyone serious believes Obama is uses islamic policies. I think this slipped out because it’s so common among the right to tie Obama to Islam.

Now, you’ve ignored this opinion, and brought up the 57 states gaffe. You seem to be insinuating that if I believe this woman made a mistake because of the underlying motif about Obama and Islam, than I must believe Obama mistakenly said 57 states referring to 57 Islamic states.

Do you believe Obama accidentally brought up 57 states because he was referring to 57 Islamic states? Will you give a straight answer to this question? Will you also elaborate as to why that would concern you?

You sir, are an interesting fellow. Most people just flame on here for the fun of it, but I have no doubt you believe in your heart that what you say on here is true.

I gave Santorum the pass when they said that he questioned the theology of the president’s policies.  I understood that he wasn’t questioning the president’s faith but whether or not those policies adhered to the Christian faith.  This lady’s comments crossed the line.  Regardless of whether it was a mistake or no, it was baseless and ignorantly bigoted.

it boils down to this.. they choose to use the word “radical” for a reason.. when they throw that in they know it leads to subconscious thoughts by their followers on a particular topic..  islam, muslims, middle east, etc..   so naturally “islam” followed in her slip up because of their backroom agenda and rules- use the word “radical” alot when talking about obama..

the slip up on her part was their own fault.

She’s probably just too used to saying “Islamic” after using the word “radical”. This is sort of like the “bla– people” remark by Santorum. I had a dream the other night that I had TS and I couldn’t stop saying racist thing. I would suggest that Santorum and his staff take a nap.

Another poster described it this way:Stalin and Mao may have disbelieved in the God of old time religion, but they supplanted that belief with another belief that they themselves were infallible, and they made sure that all the people they ruled over also believed likewise, upon pain of torture, imprisonment, and death. In other words they exchanged one form of religion for another; one type of deity for another deity — self-deification in other terms. So they were not against the worship of the divine per se, but they considered themselves to have a preordained destiny or right to power that is evocative of divinity. This is not atheism based on a rational system of thinking. This is just one religion traded in for another.”

  • shonangreg

Scientists can be Christian and do science without having their religion impede their science. “Render unto Caesar”, you know? When performing an experiment, to any scientist, Christian or not, it doesn’t matter what the Bible says. All that matters are the observations. Did the bacteria evolve? Did the particle decompose into some heretofore undiscovered one?

Rick, could you tell me what a “Christian science” would even be? (And not the religion calling itself “Christian Science”. Unless you are a Christian Scientist, that is different.)

  • shonangreg

No, not proven. That the earth revolves around the sun and not vice-versa, the Heliocentric Theory. Also, not proven. We’ve confirmed these theories to the point that we don’t waste time even doubting them, but they are not proven. Ditto for evolution. A theory that is VERY well confirmed. Climate change is not in the same league as evolution. But the theories and hypotheses of scientists are all we have to go by.

Another way to look at this. Politicians the world over are known for corruption. Western science, though, conspiracies happen VERY rarely and science itself roots them out. Cold fusion and the Korean cloning scandal are the tow most recent examples. There quite simply is no history of scientists pulling the wool over the people’s eyes like the right wing in America is claiming. That politicians would pull the wool over our eyes in inarguable.

You’re choosing the wrong side, Rick. Come to the light. Everything is clearer here. And you can even continue being a Christian, though a bit of thought will inevitably lead you to understand that Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden was just a story — never happened. Treating this as a metaphor, like the parables Christ spoke in, does not mean there is no God. Don’t be afraid of thinking. I’m telling you it feels good to be unafraid of seeing new ideas.

  • Carl Emmoth

    Dictator, are you talking about
    Alexander Lukashenko  or?

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

She repeatedly referred to radical environmental policies. Pathetic attempt by Gibbs and others to claim otherwise. Same with Santorum’s use of theology. He even said he wasn’t talking about bible theology.

If anyone believes she meant to say Islamic policies, then they must believe Obama is a Muslim and that Ted Kennedy meant to call Obama Osama Bin Laden.
    Obama My Muslim Faith
Ted Kennedy calls Obama Osama bin Laden

People misspeak. Especially when words are as common as Osama Bin Laden, and Radical Islam.

Dean Singleton mistakenly says “Obama bin Laden”
John Ashcroft calls Barack Obama “Osama”
ABC News Anchor calls Obama Osama.
    “President Obama is dead”
    Matt Lauer calls Obama Osama
OBAMA called OSAMA BIN LADEN by NBC Channel 4

Were they all attempting deceptive fear mongering?

Before Santorum continues his goal of

    States of America:

    Article Six: The Senators and
Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State
Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United
States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to
