For leading the charge in defunding Obamacare, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was rewarded by the Values Voter Summit with a definitive win in the straw poll vote for the GOP 2016 presidential nominee.
Cruz won a resounding 42% of the vote, more than the next five candidates combined. He trounced fellow big name contenders, including Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) , Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) and more.
The Republican Party has been the site of massive infighting since Cruz’s strategy to defund Obamacare induced the government shutdown currently wreaking havoc on GOP approval ratings. But the fight has clearly intensified passions for the junior senator from Texas among the more conservative elements of the party.
Former Senator Rick Santorum, who was an unexpectedly viable candidate for the GOP nomination in 2012, finished strongly. Also notable was the high placement of Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who has become a popular conservative pundit.
Close observers/pranksters will also note the name at the very bottom of the list.
