No, you aren’t misreading that headline. Democratic presidential candidate and self-proclaimed socialist Bernie Sanders will be speaking at the solidly religious conservative Liberty University next month.
Liberty U has been a beacon for Republican candidates; it’s where Ted Cruz kicked off his 2016 campaign.
But Sanders happily accepted an invitation to address a convocation at the learning institution founded by Jerry Falwell, and in a statement, he said he’s looking forward to it:
“Liberty University was kind enough to invite me to address a convocation and I decided to accept. It goes without saying that my views on many issues — women’s rights, gay rights, education and many other issues — are very different from the opinions of some in the Liberty University community. I think it is important, however, to see if we can reach consensus regarding the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in our country, about the collapse of the middle class, about the high level of childhood poverty, about climate change and other issues.”
Sanders says it’s easy to talk to people who already agree with him, another thing entirely to reach out to a group that probably isn’t on board with much of his philosophy.
Per Liberty’s website, Sanders will speak on September 14th. (The only other 2016 candidate on their schedule is Ben Carson.)
