Which makes it noteworthy that in his report following Trump’s meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, Acosta seemed to offer some praise (if a bit reluctantly) for the U.S. President.
Appearing with Brooke Baldwin, CNN’s chief White House correspondent preached caution, stressing that a full readout of the meeting was needed in order for a more accurate assessment to take place. Yet he also said he believes Trump’s confronting Putin on Russian election interference would be a sign that the President is “listening to his critics”:
“Clearly, from what the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters after this meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin that it does appear President Trump was listening to his critics and really urging him (sic) to go into this meeting with the Russian president and confront Vladimir Putin on this issue.”
Acosta noted that Trump only yesterday said other countries could have been involved in election interference and was reluctant to blame Russia.
“And so for the President, despite those expressed reservations about all of this, to go into this meeting and say that, I think is pretty significant,” he said.
