On Tuesday morning, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) scolded the hosts of Fox & Friends in an appearance on their program after the hosts equated the Arabic expression “Allahu Akbar” with the English expression “thank God.” On Friday, McCain was chided as “ignorant” for this comment by conservative radio host Laura Ingraham and Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), who is a second generation Arab-American.
“Oh my goodness. He’s so ignorant,” Ingraham said after playing a clip of McCain correcting the hosts of Fox & Friends on Tuesday. “He doesn’t understand that that’s part of the calling card of the jihadists?”
“It’s part of the holy war’s lexicon,” she added. “It’s embarrassing.”
“Senator McCain’s response was completely ignorant and offensive,” Amash agreed. “Good people, whether they’re Muslims, Christians, or Jews don’t scream ‘thank God’ when they kill people.”
“It’s completely outrageous that he’d say such a thing,” Amash added.
Amash later expressed his opposition to the proposed strike in Syria and the Congressional Republican leadership which supports President Barack Obama’s call for intervention.
