John Kelly Reportedly Encouraged Republicans to Speak Out Against Trump After Putin Presser

As expected, there’s been a lot of reporting about internal White House fury over President Donald Trump‘s disaster press conference with Vladimir Putin. But this newest one has a pretty shocking detail.

Vanity Fair‘s Gabriel Sherman reports tonight that chief of staff John Kelly was “irate”:

He also exerted pressure to try to get the president to walk back his remarks. According to three sources familiar with the situation, Kelly called around to Republicans on Capitol Hill and gave them the go-ahead to speak out against Trump.

Kelly is not the only White House staffer dismayed by what happened in Helsinki, if that report and others in the past day are any indication. There have been reports from Sherman and others about Kelly being on the outs in the White House.
