Jimmy Kimmel pulled no punches during his opening monologue at the Academy Awards on Sunday night — even taking on perhaps the most beloved actress in Hollywood, albeit sarcastically.
Towards the end of his routine, Kimmel took aim at the “highly overrated” Meryl Streep, who received her 20th Oscar nomination this year.
In remarks clearly meant to be tongue-in-cheek, Kimmel said of Streep, “from her mediocre work in The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa, to her underwhelming performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, Meryl Streep has phoned it in for more than 50 films.”
After the laughter died down, he encouraged the crowd to give Streep a hand, and they responded with a rousing standing ovation.
But Kimmel had a parting shot for Streep after the applause died down.
“Nice dress, by the way,” Kimmel said to Streep. “Is that an Ivanka?”
