Robert Gibbs Tells Mediaite He Doesn’t Know If Limbaugh Was Told To “Go Play With Himself”
News broke recently that a new biography of Rush Limbaugh is coming out and includes a funny story of President Obama turning down an offer to play golf with Limbaugh, saying that the conservative radio host could “go play with himself.” Limbaugh has since responded, comedically claiming “now wait a second, they’re confusing me with Bill Clinton.” Well Mediaite’s own member of the White House Press Corps tried to get to the bottom of this, as you can see in the following exchange:
To be fair, in our initial report we may have oversold the story a tad, though all the more reason to follow up with Gibbs. A transcript from the exchange follows the video:
Tommy Christopher: My second question: Do you have anything on the — there’s a new book that’s quoting someone from the White House on Rush Limbaugh, telling him what he can do with himself. Have you —
MR. GIBBS: You’re going to have to be more specific. (Laughter.)
Les Kinsolving: What do you think Limbaugh can do with himself?
MR. GIBBS: You guys are just —
Les Kinsolving: Limbaugh is our colleague on talk radio.
MR. GIBBS: I’m just asking you to be more specific. I don’t know why you think I’m disparaging anybody.
Tommy Christopher: There’s a book quoting a senior White House official responding to an invitation to golf with Rush Limbaugh by saying that Limbaugh can play with himself. And there are some that have speculated that the source of that quote was the President via an aide. I’m wondering if you can —
MR. GIBBS: I don’t know the answer to that. Lynn, do you have —
Tommy Christopher: Has the President ever said anything like that?
MR. GIBBS: Not that I — not in my presence, no.
