Trump Embraces Child Separation: ‘If You Don’t Separate, FAR More’ Will Come

Central American asylum seekers wait as U.S. Border Patrol agents take them into custody on June 12, 2018 near McAllen, Texas. The families were then sent to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing center for possible separation.

After his administration spent months denying there even was a family separation policy, Donald Trump has once again embraced the issue by making a series of false claims in a Sunday morning tweet.

Trump’s tweet began by claiming that “The Democrats policy of Child Seperation (sic) on the Border during the Obama Administration was far worse than the way we handle it now. Remember the 2014 picture of children in cages – the Obama years.”

That claim has been repeatedly debunked, notably by a reporter who fact-checked Trump right to his face. The Obama administration never had a “zero-tolerance” policy for criminally prosecuting all border crossers, and separating them from their children in the process.

But in the same tweet, Trump went from distancing himself from the policy to embracing it, claiming that “if you don’t separate, FAR more people will come. Smugglers use the kids!”

Once again, though, the facts are not on Trump’s side. Border apprehensions have increased dramatically under Trump, including during the months the policy was in place.
