Trump Retweets False Claim About Chelsea Manning and Oscar López Rivera

President Donald Trump did not author any new Tweets on Monday morning, but that’s not to say he wasn’t busy on the social media platform.

With the Hurricane Harvey search and rescue operations ongoing in Houston in the wake of the devastating storm, the President took a moment to retweet the following:

The claims Trump retweeted from Townhall editor Katie Pavlich were false. Former President Barack Obama did not pardon Chelsea Manning or Oscar Lopez Rivera. Their sentences were commuted.

There is an important legal distinction between the two acts. A pardon erases the conviction altogether, while a commutation simply results in a prisoner’s release. The crime remains on their record.

Following those two retweets, Trump pivoted:
