Trump Official to CNN: Kirstjen Nielsen Thought President Was Becoming ‘Increasingly Unhinged’ on Immigration
Kirstjen Nielsen‘s abrupt resignation as Homeland Security Secretary came at the request of President Donald Trump, over clashes on immigration policy, according to multiple reports.
A senior White House official told Axios’s Jonathan Swan that Trump wasn’t satisfied with Nielsen, and asked for her resignation. “He didn’t think she was getting the job done,” the official said.
CBS News reported that Nielsen’s departure is part of a “massive overhaul” of DHS “engineered and directed” by Stephen Miller, a top Trump adviser and immigration hardliner.
Meanwhile, a a senior administration official told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Nielsen “believed the situation was becoming untenable with the President becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests.”

Nielsen’s resignation comes days after Trump withdrew the nomination of Ronald Vitiello to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a DHS agency. Trump told reporters he wanted a “tougher” leader for ICE, though he has yet to name a replacement amidst warnings of a crisis at the border.
