Carl Bernstein: Fox News Hosts Are ‘Abetting a Cover-Up’ With Anti-Mueller Rhetoric

If you’ve watched Fox News in recent days, you’ve likely noticed a concentrated effort among its opinion hosts to discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation into Russian election meddling and possible links to the Trump campaign. Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Jeanine Pirro and others have devoted quite a bit of airtime to making the case that the probe is illegitimate and corrupt.

During today’s broadcast of CNN’s Reliable Sources, legendary Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein was asked by host Brian Stelter what the impact of the anti-Mueller campaign would be and if Fox News was “abetting a cover-up.”

“Yes, it abets a cover-up because there is a cover-up going on in the White House and among Trump’s aides and former aides relating to the investigations,” Bernstein stated. “We don’t know what the cover-up is about, whether it constitutes an obstruction of justice or a criminal conspiracy at this point.”

He continued, “But yes, because the commentators that you are hearing and showing are not open in any way to the best obtainable version of the truth, to facts, context, who seem to be oblivious to the serial lying of the President of the United States and members of his family and staff. They are abetting a cover-up.”

Stelter told Bernstein that he had heard varying theories behind the anti-Mueller rhetoric, noting that some feel they are goading Trump to fire Mueller while others feel that this is about impeachment politics and providing Republicans a defense if proceedings begin.

Bernstein explained that was a bit “over-complicated” while stating that there is an attempt by Trump supporters to defend the president at “any cost including the cost of truth.” He then mentioned that we are in the midst of a “cold civil war” that involves a “willingness to be oblivious to facts.”
