Colbert Blames Emmy Awards For Trump: He Never Would’ve Run If Celebrity Apprentice Won an Emmy
Stephen Colbert is hosting the 2017 Emmy Awards tonight, and he used a good chuck of his opening monologue to mock President Trump and bash him over his recent political controversies.
After concluding the ceremony’s star-studded opening musical number, Colbert proceeded to muse about the achievements of tonight’s nominees. As Colbert went on with his jokes, he reminded himself that Trump is probably watching tonight’s show to keep tabs on which people say negative things about him.
“Hello, sir,” Colbert said to the camera. “Thank you for joining us. Looking forward to the tweets!”
The soliloquy eventually focused on Trump completely when Colbert spoke about how the president is competing with his SNL doppleganger Alec Baldwin to be the biggest star on television. With politics influencing more and more forms of entertainment, Colbert wondered if Joe Arpaio could become next year’s host at the Grammys.
“We all know the Emmys mean a lot to Donald Trump, because he was nominated multiple times for Celebrity Apprentice, but he never won,” Colbert continued. “I tell you this, if he had won an Emmy, I bet he wouldn’t have run for president. So in a way this is all your fault.”
Do stick around for the part where Sean Spicer makes a surprise appearance.
