MSNBC’s Chris Hayes faced off with Republican congressman Steve King tonight over his views on Muslim assimilation in the United States.
After talking immigration, Hayes brought up King’s comments this morning about Syrian refugees that he’s seen no evidence of assimilation whenever Muslims from that part of the world come into the United States. Hayes asked him if that’s really a defensible position.
King said he was talking about “groups of people, not individuals,” but did maintain that these groups do not assimilate. A bewildered Hayes said, “You really want to say that they’re different in some fundamental way.”
“Of course I do,” King answered. “They bring with them sharia law, which is completely contradictory to the Constitution.”
Hayes then asked him if he thinks “Muslims in the Middle East are incompatible with American democracy.” King responded, “If they’re willing to reject sharia law, then we can talk.”
