Texas Tribune Editor: Stockman Campaign Like an ‘Andy Kaufman Prank’

Texas Tribune editor in chief Evan Smith told a Morning Joe panel Monday morning that Steve Stockman’s increasingly inexplicable campaign against incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) in the Texas GOP primary had reached the level of comedic performance art.

Stockman filed at the last minute to challenge Cornyn, whom he has attacked as an Obamacare-funding liberal. Since then, Stockman has barely campaigned or raised any money, but has made headlines with everything from strange photoshopping incidents to a two-week spell in which Stockman simply disappeared (he turned out to have been on a CODEL for some reason).

“Only by the standards of Texas in 2014 could anybody call John Cornyn a liberal,” Smith said, explaining Cornyn’s near 50-point lead in the race. “But the Stockman campaign has also been, to put it mildly, bizarre. It’s a little bit like an Andy Kaufman prank. Nobody can figure out what this guy is doing or what his campaign is doing, and I think that has absolutely hurt him. Even many of the base tea party Republican guys don’t support Stockman. Cornyn is going to walk away, by all accounts in this poll, with this primary, no runoff.”
