WSJ Editorial Board Member on Fox News: Summit With Trump a ‘Great Propaganda Victory’ For Putin
Wall Street Journal editorial board member Mary Kissel declared the summit between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin a “propaganda victory” for the Russian president on Fox News.
Appearing on Fox News Monday immediately after the press conference held with the two leaders, Kissel called the performance “classic performance by Putin,” as the president juggled flattery of Trump with manipulating “the world’s attention from what he himself has done.”
“Look, it could have been worse,” Kissel said, noting Trump didn’t give ground on Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
Fox News Sandra Smith then asked Kissel what her headline is for the summit.
“I think unfortunately it is that President Putin scored a great propaganda victory by standing up with President Trump on that stage, especially some of the conciliatory language that Trump used towards him,” Kissel replied. “Nothing was really achieved here beyond promising to reach again.”
“The conciliatory language, I think, is concerning, Sarah,” she added.
Kissel was even less charitable on Twitter, writing that Putin has concluded he can “manipulate” Trump.
An incredibly low bar, yes. I think Putin has taken the measure of Trump & concluded he can manipulate him. https://t.co/EJYqMqKUjr
