Snarky ‘Chimichanga’ Tweet By Obama Official Erupts Into Controversy

Holy frijoles! A snarky tweet sent by Obama campaign manager Jim Messina intended to jab Republicans over weak Latino support backfired when dozens of Latino Republicans fired back at Messina about his racially-insensitive use of the term “chimichanga.” “The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos,” Messina tweeted.

Messina was quoting a Dana Milbank line that was used in a column titled “Does the GOP care about Latino voters?”

Univision’s Jordan Fabian called the message “eyebrow-raising” and noted that many Republicans of Latin descent lit into Messina for using what they perceived to be a “culturally-insensitive” even “racist” terminology, demanding he apologize.

“The fact that the campaign manager of President Obama’s reelection campaign thinks it’s appropriate to disseminate insulting jokes about the Hispanic community is a perfect example of the kind of empty rhetoric that characterizes this White House’s so-called outreach to Latinos. We demand that Mr. Messina immediately apologize and we ask that President Obama disavow his campaign manager’s ridiculous statement,” said Jennifer Sevilla Korn, executive director of the conservative Hispanic Leadership Network, according to The Hill’s Justin Sink.

“It’s not racist when WE do it!”

Sorry, he was saying that the R’s have nothing to offer Latinos…and he said all they could offer was a specific Mexican food…how is that supposed to be offensive to Latinos? He said the name of a food? Hey…Swedish Meatballs...uh oh…here come the angry Swedes…

I just know that Tommy Christopher is hard at work right now about the racist dog-whistling inherent in Messina’s remarks.

This past four years have been a blessing to actual racists. They can now breathe a sigh of relief, after four years of nonstop racism accusations from the left, no one takes the accusations at face value anymore.

  • Anonymous

And don’t forget, Newt is racist for calling a man named Juan, “Juan.”

  • Anonymous

    Nothing to see here.

I’m Latino and I don’t see any reason for Latinos to be offended.

Conservatives Latinos are grasping at straws.

Sounds like this asshat’s a “taco short of a combo plate”.

I now know what I’ll be having for dinner tonight.. That chimichanga looks delicious..

  • Tom Joyce

I agree. How is quoting a line by a political writer that says that all GOP can offer Latinos is an American Mexican restaurant staple racist I would question this particular Democratic politicians sense of humor. If that is really the line of the day, then this is an unmemorable day.

But if you pass laws that anyone who looks like they aren’t a citizen needs to be stopped and grilled until he proves he is, if you call Spanish the language of poverty and non success and the Ghetto, if you appeal to Americans fear of Spanish speaking people, you have no business trying to take umbrage on behalf of your favorite minority.

Let the GOP at their debates bring up Latinos and their support for work cards, for honoring the contribution of immigrants, for asking Americans to assume that every Spanish looking person is American and allow him or her to pass freely, if they are so concerned about this issue.

Let’s see what a Republican debate crowd would do with a GOP candidate reaching out for Latinos in one of his answer.

  • Ben

    Ha!
Yes…it was a complete eruption of a dozen tweets from conservatives!!
    One from sarainitaly,of course!

Now that certainly is not Michelle approved fare.

Oft troll-repeated false assertion, but to answer your question:

Perhaps they heard and understood what he was saying ?

Now here are Gingrich’s original comments:

We should replace bilingual education with immersion in
English so people learn the common language of the country and so they
learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto.

Gingrich clearly meant no offense to Hispanics, and in fact did not
even refer to Spanish. One can argue he implied Spanish, the most
commonly spoken foreign language in the U.S., but the point would be the
same for other languages. Lack of English proficiency affects
immigrants ability to earn more than a minimal income, which should
    surprise no one.

When this controversy first arose, Gingrich apologized, and to make
the point he has nothing against Hispanics or the Spanish language, he
apologized in Spanish, which unlike many politicians, Gingrich made the
effort to learn. Many politicians have a hard time apologizing for much
of anything, but Gingrich has repeatedly shown a willingness to accept
responsibility for mistakes, even when he clearly meant no offense.

    Translation:

Last weekend I made some comments that I recognize
produced a bad feeling within the Latino community. The words I chose to
express myself were not the best, and what I wanted to say is this. In
the United States it is important to speak English well in order to
progress and have success. To achieve this goal, we should replace
bilingual education programs with intensive English instruction courses
and in this way permit that English be the language that all of us have
    in common.

This is an expression of support for Latinos, not an attack on their
language. I have never believed that Spanish is a language of people of
low income nor a language without beauty.

    Why stop there?
How about a tweet with a watermelon and a Colt 45 punchline?

I’m sure you probably said the same thing when a Politician was deemed a racist for calling a man named Juan by his own name: Juan??

Or when the same Politician was referred to as a racist for calling the US president a food stamp president, even when it is that there are more whites on food stamps than blacks?

  • Duke Chesnut

If a Democrat says a Racist thing in the Media, it is called Snarky. If A Republican says something Snarky in the Media, its called Racist. Double Standard Malarky, If Juan is considered racist, then calling Chimmichanga’s all that someone has to offer, is over the top racism, from the same party that brought you Jim Crow laws and the Watermellon comparisons, I give you Jim Messina.

Much like the Briar patch comment from last year, I dont agree that this is exactly what it looks like.  The guy quoted someone else.  So the misdirected outrage is just comical.  Maybe he showed poor judgement in actually quoting it, but its not his words.  All he said was “line of the day”  well congrats, you showed once again that Americans have little to no sense of humor anymore.  Hyper partisan, hypercharged culture where everyone is a victim.  Remember this republicans when you say you dont play the victim.

*wipes a tear away for the chimichanga

But Republicans didn’t care enough about that to stand up [for Jordan, the disrespectfully filibustered judicial nominee, who is Cuban.] Through the “debate” on the nomination, one senator after the other came to the floor — and ignored the delay. Some spoke about transportation. Others spoke about the budget. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spoke about the wonders of his state. “The lettuce in your salad this month almost certainly came from Arizona,” McCain said. “It’s also believed that the chimichanga has its origin in Arizona.” The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos.

So let me get this straight: “chimichanga” is a Messina tweet of a Milbank item of a McCain quote? Jeez, if accusations of racism have been truly discredited bypast few years overuse, why do conservatives continue to throw out their backs trying to conjure them up?

Given that it’s not an actual controversy, just something Republicans wish would be a controversy, probably not. And rightly so.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

Gingrich wasn’t “deemed a racist” for that. Gingrich has been judged a racist based on his long history of racism. You can argue whether his exchange with Juan Williams was another example of racism, but given Gingrich’s extremely disrespectful tone it probably was.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

Except that all those accusations have been targeted at actual racists. It just so happens that the actual racists are almost exclusively conservative Republicans.

Don’t worry, I’m sure the Southern Poverty Law Center will be all over this one with fire extinguishers blazing and declare: nothing to see here, move along, move along. Bigotry is not bigotry from the Left since they have acknowledged white guilt and white privilege. It’s just Chimichanga Town.

Messina was quoting Dana Milbank.  Besides, are there “dozens” of  latino republicans?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

Nothing racist about this, wingnuts. It’s a simple fact, the GOP is an anti-Hispanic party. The greatest fear of the GOP is the day when Hispanics outnumber whites in America. Given that, the very idea of Republican outreach to Hispanics is laughable.

  • Smack80

You can’t be Catholic anymore? How so? The contraceptive issue has been settled. Religious organizations no longer have to chip in money for contraceptive coverage anymore. They have been given the same exemption the churches get. Now that the church doesn’t have to pay what is your issue?

  • http://www.proactivepolitics.blogspot.com/ Norbit Peters

It’s not a controversy because the Media Matters networks are covering it up!

A commercial alluding to our unsustainable debt with China is called “racist” by the Obama/Media Matters mainstream news outlets; but besmirching the whole of the Hispanic population – by Obama’s campaign manager, no less – is deliberately ignored!

Once the GOP Super Pacs engage, things like this will not be ignored any longer!

  • Anonymous

Tell that to conservative Hispanics.  Even better, take your liberal butt to a Cuban neighborhood in Florida and try to tell them how great socialism is.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

That commercial was called racist because it is undeniably racist. I mean really, you can’t see what’s racist about an ad that’s based entirely on xenophobia and anti-Chinese stereotypes?

On the other hand, nothing about this comment “besmirches” the Hispanic population, and you have to be a lunatic to believe otherwise. Of course, I already know that you are a lunatic.
