State Of Emergency Declared As Spreading Oil Spill Nears Gulf Coast
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill moves towards gulf shores and threatens the delicate ecosystem in that area. As emergency workers scramble to the area, so too are cable news producers scrambling as this story begins to elevate in import and relevance to many American states potentially effected.
Cain Burdeau reports for Associated Press:
Thursday’s order allows the state to free up resources to begin preparing for the oil to reach the shore, which could happen as soon as Friday.
The spill could affect a wide variety of wildlife, including the oysters, shrimp and other creatures that commercial fishermen depend on to make a living.
Meanwhile, the federal government has sent skimmers, booms and other resources to try and contain the spill.
CNN’s Ali Velshi reports on the emergency state with Pentagon reporter Barbara Starr and meteorologist Chad Myers.
