Wonderful Montage Shows Nearly Every Film Appearance Of The Twin Towers

video

Unsurprisingly, we’re currently being inundated with tributes to the victims, survivors, and heros of 9/11. However a video picking up steam online this week makes a wonderfully simple and beautiful ode to two of the biggest victims of that horrible day; the Twin Towers themselves. The video edits together clips of nearly every film appearance the buildings made in their time in the sky. Seeing how directors frame their shots to perfectly capture the Towers is an amazingly effective way to remind us just how iconic they were.

The video, edited by Dan Meth, shows everything from shots of them still under construction in 1972′s The Hot Rock, to Snake Plisken landing atop one in Escape from New York, to little, lost Kevin McCallister visiting them in Home Alone 2. Meth describes his video like this:

From 1969 to 2001, the Twin Towers made countless cameos in Hollywood films. Sometimes featured prominently in the foreground, sometimes lurking in the distance. This montage celebrates the towers’ all-too-short film career with songs that capture the passing decades. Man, I miss them.

It really is a wonderful piece. Watch it below:

Great idea, Ralph. If anyone wants to list their favorite TT moments whether they were missed or not, please do.

This is cheesy, but I’ve always loved the original Spider-Man teaser that started like a big bank heist then surprisingly ended with the robbers’ helicopter caught in a giant web between the towers. Wonderful surprise and used the Towers to great effect to show the scope of the upcoming movie.
The teaser only aired briefly. It was pulled after the attack.

Heartbreak. TT at the end of Gangs of New York was missed I believe.

Sometimes on TV you can see an opening to an old “Law and Order” with the WTC as part of the night-time view.

(Interesting to note that many of the movies mentioned in this montage did not do too well at the box office.)

For sure the “All For The Best” dance number atop the (at the time) unfinished WTC tower in 1973′s “Godspell” is a notable omission, also the (abeit CGI) sequence of Snake Pliskin landing atop the tower in John Carpernter’s “Escape From New York” (1981).

The Towers were always shown in the opening scene from Sex and the City TV series and alluded to in a very poetic way one segment after the disaster.

Early seventies movie “Loving” shows George Segal walking up to the fifth floor while the tower is being built ( no walls yet ) .

Letterman’s old show opened with the camera flying into an office high up in the tower and out the other side .

An early Kojak shows the new towers in the background and both towers are shown in a flashback of Life on Mars .

  • Jon Bershad

He used the beginning of that EFNY scene with the glider first heading up to the tower. I’m guessing he didn’t use the actual landing because it it’s more recognizable from a distance.

Godspell’s great though. That’s a biggie. My favorite song in the show too.

  • Jon Bershad

GoNY was actually the first one I thought of. I think he made a point of not using any movies made after the attacks though.

  • Jon Bershad

The Sopranos opening also had them really clearly. I remember, at the time, my dad and I had a long conversation before the next season about whether or not they’d take them out. We were very glad when they didn’t.

Since we’ve opened up TV usage, someone’s got to mention the great New York Simpsons episode which features the WTC heavily in its plot and features a hilarious gag in which Homer tries to use the bathroom in one of the Towers’ observation decks.

Sadly, I think this scene gets cut out of a lot of syndication airings.

I remember that trailer and was the first thing I thought of before seeing Dan’s video and hoped it would be included in the montage.

And now they replaced it with pussy plaza.
Every “tower” shorter than the last in a race to the basement.
    The new designs sucks….SUCKS.
And it will only take ten plus years.

  • Robbery31

    Glaring omission:  Spielberg’s “Munich.”

  • http://twitter.com/DreadfulPenny81 Melissa E.

I could swear the TT’s were also in “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Big”, but I didn’t see scenes from either of those movies. A lot of them were obscure films I’d never even heard of.

I’m probably the odd one out here, but as much as I think this is well done, it’s just another reminder to the families of where their loved ones worked & died.

  • Anonymous

    You’re the only one.

People have the ability not to watch and should we not have ever seen pictures of Pearl Harbor again following the bombing for fear of offending a relative of one of the victims?

  • Anonymous

I think everyone handles it differently.  Some may be reminded when they don’t want to be but others might be reminded thankfully.

  • Anonymous

I cannot imagine how the families feel.

I see the Twin Towers and remember.

The World Trade Center in film and television has been address, but the buildings were also seen in various music videos that appeared on MTV and VH1 throughout the 80s and 90s.

No one could have predicted that terrorists would hijack planes and crash them into the World Trade Center.  But someone did predict that terrorists could crash land a jet into the Pentagon.

“Suicide bomber(s) belonging to al-Qaida’s Martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives (C-4 and semtex) into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or the White House. Ramzi Yousef had planned to do this against the CIA headquarters.”

And then of course, there is National Lampoon’s European Vacation where Chevy Chase accidentally crashes a jet into the Statue of Liberty, 1985, but I can’t locate that exact clip.  This one must suffice.

Agreed, and I thought of it immediately.  The final scene in that film is gripping because of the towers.  It’s a post-9/11 film, so that’s the only reason I can conjure as to why “Munich” was omitted.

I remember seeing the WTC in “The Money Pit”, but there are many others:

    What about Cannibal Holocaust??!!

I assume you’re a horror fan, so there’s also the great “Maniac.”

This was a great idea, Jon.  I wish I wasn’t late to this party.

While checking to see if the towers were shown in the great “Night Hawks” with Sylvester Stallone and Rutger Hauer(it is) I came across this site:

It’s pretty extensive and a good reminder of some flicks I need to revisit.

For me, my favorite is still Escape From NY.  I’m a huge Carpenter fan.

“The video edits together clips of nearly every film appearance the buildings made”  NEARLY every film?  Barely a tenth of the movies they were in.  I’ve collected almost 700 movies on my site.  (Thanks for the mention, Turk281.)

The ironic thing is that most of the WTC shots in Escape from New York were models and not the actual towers.

  • anonymous

I think they should stop erasing them and that they should put them in new movies and tv shows.  If they leave them out, especially if they edit them out of movies, they are giving the terrorists the satisfaction they wanted.
