Rachel Maddow: Obama Sending Troops To Border Sets Off GOP Bidding War

video

What a difference two weeks and a catastrophic oil spill makes. Less than two weeks ago the fallout from the new Arizona Immigration law was dominating the headlines, and threatened the dominate the entire summer (the jury’s still out on that last one). Last night’s announcement, however, that President Obama had decided to send an additional 1200 National Guard troops (and $500 million) to the border appears to take second place behind the oil spill that has dominated the newscycle this week.

Nevertheless, the news, which was greeted by a number of media folks with barely a shrug, has been greeted by the GOP with calls for more. Rachel Maddow noted last night that the announcement has started a bit of a bidding war on the right with “dang” John McCain want 6000 troops (also the number Bush sent back in 2006 when he was trying to appease immigration foes) and the GOP, in these hard economic times, would prefer if the President spent $2 billion. You’d never guess it’s an election year. Meanwhile, Jan Brewer thinks her new AZ law is what prompted all this action in the first place. Video below.

  • Liberty – Not Redistribution

Just like the previous regime, this deployment of NG troop to the border area is only symbolic and publicity stunt. These guardsmen are going to be doing desk jobs. They are not going to be protecting anything. Bu$h did it as he attempted to get the Amnesty Bill passed, and it’s Obama’$ turn to lie an distract the American people.

    Finish the darn fence!!

I agree Liberty, Bush was awful on this. All sides need to stop pandering for votes and start worrying about it’s citizens.

  • Liberty – Not Redistribution

The US government, and many state and local governments, are doing everything in their power to allow ignore the will of the people. No one is saying stop legal and productive immigration. What the American people want, according to poll after poll after poll, is for the government to stop illegal immigration, ensure businesses stop circumventing legal hiring regulations, and know who the hell is in this country.

There is nothing wrong with a country enforcing it’s immigration laws. Don’t reward those that break the law.

    Liberty,

You’re above posts clearly demonstrate that you are a racist who just wants Mexicans rounded up. Have you not seen the film “A Day Without Mexicans”? If not, that is further evidence of your racism.

    tee hee j/k

Just getting you warmed up for TRRK’s post.

The White House released a statement yesterday following their decision to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to the border to target illicit trafficking networks:

The President is committed to a strategic approach, consisting of a requirements-based, temporary utilization of up to 1,200 additional National Guard troops to bridge to longer-term enhancements in border protection and law enforcement personnel from the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice to target illicit networks’ trafficking in people, drugs, illegal weapons, money, and the violence associated with these illegal activities.

Later in the day Mexican President Calderon set the rules for the troops.
From the Mexican Foreign Ministry, via Michelle Malkin:

Regarding the Administration’s decision to send 1,200 National Guard servicemen to the US Southern border, the Government of Mexico trusts that this decision will help to channel additional US resources to enhance efforts to prevent the illegal flows of weapons and bulk cash into Mexico, which provide organized crime with its firepower and its ability to corrupt.

Additionally, the Government of Mexico expects that National Guard personnel will strengthen US operations in the fight against transnational organized crime that operates on both sides of our common border and that it will not, in accordance to its legal obligations, conduct activities directly linked to the enforcement of immigration laws.

So who’s really calling the shots in this regime? Mexico, Geogre Soros, who?

This step obviously proves that Obama hates all Mexicans, and is anti-immigrant.

Mr. Maddow can continue her smarmy rants all day but she totally misses the point !!!!!!!

Obama is clearly on the wrong side of public opinion and he knows it! The majority of Arizonans and Americans on a national basis support the legislation passed in Arizona. Obama’s poll numbers are plummeting and he knows it.

So he sends a token number of National Guard troops to the border. This is just a drop in the bucket.

If you notice this President will do the bare minimum to appease his critics. Case in point: Remember his much-touted “Jobs Summit” back in December of 2009? What have we heard about that since? (Crickets)

Obama is getting worried that even his left wing loonies and his MSM useful idiots are starting to abandon him as well.

BHO is now a racist. There is no other explanation for this.

“also the number Bush sent back in 2006 when he was trying to appease immigration foes)”

Was he trying to appease immigration foes or illegal immigration foes?
That line gets smeared all the time.

Good catch, Penguin60, I usally catch those. Hey Frances, how about changing that to illegal immigration foes or pointing to evidence that we are against all immigration to support your point. We await your correction or explanation.

  • Penguin60

Being first generation born in the US in my family that always strikes me. Illegal vs immigration? Not hard to discern.

No it’s not hard to discern. I submit that it is totally conscience on the part of Frances and other lefties who want people to think that those who want the rule of law followed are actually against immigration of any kind. That’s the media template that’s pushed on a daily basis. It’s disgusting and “journalists” like Frances should be ashamed for perpetuating the lie.

I heard today that the guard will be unarmed and have desk jobs.

It made me think of the Dem who spoke at the 2004 GOP Convention who asked Kerry, based on his military votes in the Senate, what did he plan on using for weapons as CIC, “spiiitbols”?

  • MichelleF

Hey, Rep. Moran, how do you say “karma” in Spanish?

    Great link, Michelle.

I think that that story is a natural for Mediaite to cover, don’t you.

BTW, I just caught the latest forecast and Hell is NOT expecting a freeze anytime soon. :)
