Fox Analyst: ‘Putin Is Playing Game of Thrones and We’re Playing Downton Abbey

Much has been made in the past few weeks of the contrast in leadership styles between Vladimir Putin and President Obama, with conservatives calling the president weak and timid by comparison. Well, former lieutenant colonel and Fox News strategic analyst Ralph Peters may have found the strangest possible phrasing for this divergence Monday night when he told Bill O’Reilly, “Vladimir Putin is playing Game of Thrones and we’re playing Downton Abbey.” (If anyone had anything remotely like that mocked up in Photoshop, this would be the time to share it.)

He and O’Reilly rolled their eyes at the newly-announced sanctions, which Peters called “timid” and “tepid.” O’Reilly offered the possibility that behind the scenes, the U.S. is building consensus in Europe to act against Putin. Peters didn’t think that would be enough.

“Consensus is a great idea. Sometimes you have to lead. And this is one of those times… [Obama should] stop pretending negotiations will solve all the world’s problems. Vladimir Putin is playing Game of Thrones and we’re playing Downton Abbey.”

Or, to put it another way, Obama is eating tea and crumpets with foreign heads of state all day while Putin is cutting off heads and watching naked ladies parade about the palace or something.
