‘Cruel and Irrational’: Members of Congress React to News About Trump Decision on DACA
With news yesterday that President Trump plans to end DACA with a 6-month delay, many members of Congress are speaking out ahead of their return to Capitol Hill tomorrow.
First off, Republican Congressman Steve King, who said ending DACA needs to happen now and not be delayed, called the news “Republican suicide”:
Ending DACA now gives chance 2 restore Rule of Law. Delaying so R Leadership can push Amnesty is Republican suicide. https://t.co/iYOLxFWp7V

Florida Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen slammed the President and took a swipe at his “great heart”:
If reports of ending #DACA within 6 months are true, #Congress must work immediately to pass law protecting #Dreamers who only know the US
— Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (@RosLehtinen) September 4, 2017
After teasing #Dreamers for months with talk of his "great heart," @POTUS slams door on them. Some "heart"…

The majority of congressional reaction thus far has come from Democrats tearing into this decision:
There are more #DACA recipients in California than in any other state. We stand with them. We have their backs. #HereToStay
— Sen Dianne Feinstein (@SenFeinstein) September 3, 2017
Admin will soon decide future of kids brought to US through no fault of their own, who've made this country their home. We must #DefendDACA.
— Amy Klobuchar (@amyklobuchar) September 4, 2017
Young people affected by #DACA are American in every way except immigration status. @POTUS ending program is not who we should be as nation.
— Sen. Al Franken (@SenFranken) September 4, 2017
Attacking minorities & stoking fear are pillars of @realDonaldTrump's Presidency. Will keep fighting to #SaveDACA and protect #DREAMers https://t.co/KNfXOd5cHg
— Senator Mazie Hirono (@maziehirono) September 4, 2017
If Trump decides to end DACA, it will be one of the ugliest and cruelest decisions ever made by a president in our modern history. https://t.co/EXfRAy5azO
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) September 4, 2017
This decision will ruin people's lives and businesses, split up families and divide communities. I will do whatever I can to fight it. https://t.co/PfwzCn1xHu
— Brian Schatz (@brianschatz) September 4, 2017
Trump ending #DACA is cruel and irrational – doing irreparable harm to DREAMers and America. I will fight for the DREAM Act.
— Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal) September 4, 2017
These are kids who only want to be good, hardworking Americans. @POTUS ought to rethink before he does huge damage to them & the economy. https://t.co/eFgC1fW0k3
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) September 4, 2017
Ending DACA would be nothing short of heartless. It's on us to demand a vote on the DREAM Act. We must stand with our Dreamers. https://t.co/pi30H6mA1J
— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) September 4, 2017
Will @SpeakerRyan & @HouseGOP create cover for @realDonaldTrump yet again? Or will they stand up for American values & fight for #Dreamers? https://t.co/lo6HOFEz3u
— Ruben Gallego (@RepRubenGallego) September 4, 2017
It's a cruel hand that extends the American dream and then steals it away. #DACA #DREAMers (1/3)
— Rep. Joe Kennedy III (@RepJoeKennedy) September 4, 2017
For an Administration marked by indifference to plight of others, today @POTUS hit rock bottom, ending protection for a bunch of kids. #DACA
— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) September 4, 2017
This is heartless. There's NO good reason to end #DACA. #DREAMers represent the American Dream. We must #DefendDACA! https://t.co/4GllfegCHP
— Rep. Joe Crowley (@repjoecrowley) September 4, 2017
If @realDonaldTrump was interested in healing our nation, he wouldn't end #DACA. His decision is based on heeling to his shrinking base. https://t.co/yjozk69MTp
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) September 4, 2017
Trump׳s DACA decision is inhumane. If he spoke to even one DREAMer he'd know it. If he had any feeling. If he could be empathetic. If only.
