The Ted Cruz campaign’s official statement on President Obama‘s nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court targets not only the president, but Donald Trump.
Ever since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Cruz has made the Supreme Court a big reason why he should be the Republican standard-bearer and not someone like Trump, who’s been on both sides of various social issues and has repeatedly talked about compromise.
So while Cruz’s statement does blast the current president for choosing a nominee who would undermine the Second Amendment and do other things conservatives aren’t fond of, he does target Trump:
A so-called ‘moderate’ Democrat nominee is precisely the kind of deal that Donald Trump has told us he would make – someone who would rule along with other liberals on the bench like Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor… We cannot afford to lose the Supreme Court for generations to come by nominating or confirming someone that a dealmaker like Donald Trump would support. Washington dealmakers cannot be trusted with such crucial lifetime appointments.
Like many of his Republican colleagues, Cruz does not believe the Senate should vote on anyone Obama nominates and let the next Commander-in-Chief decide.
