Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) was a rising star within the Democratic Party before his penchant for sending sexually explicit images of himself to young women online was exposed. Today, Weiner is attempting a comeback with a bid to become the next mayor of New York City.
Weiner’s nascent campaign released a two minute video on Wednesday intended to reintroduce the candidate to the public. The video does not gloss over the transgressions which forced him to resign from Congress, but it does not dwell on them either.
“Look, I made some big mistakes, and I know I let a lot of people down,” Weiner says. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons.”
The New York Daily News reports that Weiner will be a formidable force in the race to be the next to earn the sobriquet “Hizzoner.” Wiener begins his campaign with $4.27 million cash on hand. Though the candidate’s financial filings show no new funds have been raised and his war chest is primarily composed of funds from his former career as a member of Congress.
