German Minister: Mass Sexual Assault Is Bad, But Right-Wing Rhetoric is Worse
The Interior Minister of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia declared that while the mass sexual assault carried on in the city of Cologne New Year’s Eve was bad, right-wing rhetoric in response was equally bad or worse.
Witnesses say the mass assault was carried out by a group of young men numbering at least a thousand, and that they were uniformly of Arab or Northern African ancestry. Several dozen women have filed complaints, but no charges have been brought as of yet.
Minister Ralf Jaeger said that while the attacks were bad, Germans must not allow right-wing anti-immigrant forces to gain legitimacy.
“What happens on the right-wing platforms and in chatrooms is at least as awful as the acts of those assaulting the women,” he said, according to the BBC. “This is poisoning the climate of our society.”
