The greatest two minutes in sports take place on Saturday afternoon when the starting gate springs open and 20 3-year-old colts and geldings run for the roses in the 143rd Kentucky Derby.
But on Friday, the fillies take center stage in the Kentucky Oaks. Fourteen 3-year-old fillies are set to run in the historic race. Paradise Woods, who won the Santa Anita Oaks by a whopping 11 3/4 lengths, is the morning line favorite. She’ll have jockey Flavian Prat aboard on Friday afternoon. Other major contenders include; Miss Sky Warrior (jockey Paco Lopez), Farrell (Channing Hill), and Abel Tasman (Mike Smith).
Unfortunately, it seems as though the weather will not cooperate this weekend. It’s been raining for hours in Louisville, and the forecast is calling for rain throughout the rest of the day, and on Saturday as well.
But an expected crowd well in excess of 100,000 will surely not have their spirits dampened by the wet weather. It is one of the great sporting events in America, and it has, in recent years, truly become a two-day festival.
Post time for the race is 6:12 p.m. ET. NBC Sports Network will broadcast the action live, and also stream it on their website, free with a cable subscription. They will also stream the game on mobile devices via the NBC Sports app, which can be downloaded via the Apple App Store, and the Google Play Store.
