Obama Announces Death of ISIS’ U.S. Hostage Kayla Jean Mueller
President Barack Obama announced Tuesday morning that ISIS’ U.S. hostage Kayla Jean Mueller had died. Her death was confirmed by her family in Arizona.
“It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the death of Kayla Jean Mueller,” Obama said in a statement of the 26-year-old who was captured in 2013 while volunteering in a hospital in Aleppo.
Mueller, the last of ISIS’ U.S. hostages, was claimed by ISIS to have been killed in a Jordanian air strike last week, though ISIS presented no proof at the time. The strike occurred in retaliation for ISIS’ immolation death of Jordanian air pilot Muath al-Kasaesbeh, the third recent execution by the Sunni extremists after they murdered two Japanese hostages. ISIS executed American freelance journalist James Foley last summer in a taped beheading.
“ISIS is a hateful and abhorrent group whose actions stand in stark contrast to the spirit of people like Kayla,” Obama wrote. “On this day we take comfort in the fact that the future belongs not to those who destroy, but rather to the irrepressible goodness that Kayla Mueller will forever represent.”
