San Francisco 49ers Players Apparently Had No Idea They Made This ‘It Gets Better’ Video
It’s not every day that you see professional athletes, football players no less, standing up for gay rights. That’s what made the San Francisco 49ers’ video for the “It Gets Better” project so special when it was released last August.
But when a reporter for USA Today asked two of the players about the video this week ahead of this weekend’s Super Bowl, they appeared to have no idea what he was talking about.
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks said, “”I didn’t make any video. This is America and if someone wants to be gay, they can be gay. It’s their right. But I didn’t make any video. I think if I made a video, I’d remember it.”
After viewing the video, Brooks said he thought it was simply an “anti-bullying video” and had nothing to do with gay rights. Defensive lineman Isaac Sopoaga also denied involvement in the video, claiming that “someone is using my name.” Once he viewed the video, he reluctantly admitted his involvement but declined to comment any further.
The players comments come after their teammate Chris Culliver made explicitly anti-gay comments during a radio interview on Super Bowl media day.
While the video still remains on the 49ers’ YouTube channel, Dan Savage announced on Twitter that he was removing it from the “It Gets Better” website.
