Santorum Claims ‘Seven Or Eight’ Univ. California Schools Don’t Teach American History

Rick Santorum doesn’t shy away from commenting on education. Whether it’s calling President Obama a “snob” for wanting everyone to go to college or arguing that liberal “indoctrination” is encouraged at many colleges, his views are strong. On Monday, Santorum once again mentioned education, arguing that “seven or eight” of the schools in the University of California system do not offer an American history course — a claim that is just not accurate.

Santorum’s remarks were:

I was just reading something last night from the state of California. And that the California universities — it’s several, I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught. Just to tell you how bad it’s gotten in this country, where we’re trying to disconnect the American people from the roots of who we are, so they have an understanding of what America should be.

The University of California is comprised of 10 campuses. Of them, the following nine offer courses in American studies/history: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz.

There is one campus, San Francisco, that does not offer any American history courses. It is a medical campus. So, Santorum’s statement isn’t just off, it is plain false.
